LDS + The Hutong Team Up to Create Beijing’s 1st Cookie Monster Charity Bake-Off!
On Saturday, December 7, The Hutong Community Center hosted its first ever Cookie Monster Charity Bake-Off!
A creation by yours truly, this event showcased many of Beijing’s Best Bakers (both professional and up-and-coming) to indulge the city’s most avid cookie monsters in an effort to support a wonderful community charity – a non-profit organization called Bridging Education and Mobility (BEAM) that seeks to connect teachers in rural and migrant schools with the resources to help their classrooms succeed.
Through the event’s raffle ticket sales, a portion of the total bake sales throughout the day and entrance tickets, we raised over RMB 7,560 to fund at least 5 upcoming education projects for BEAM – to support and provide resources to educators in rural and migrant schools in China for BEAM!

Most of Beijing’s Christmas bazaars and fairs have all been taking place across the city in various embassies and hotels over the past couple weekends, but The Hutong’s Winter Fayre is the LAST Christmas Bazaar of the year and it’s taking place this Saturday, December 14th from 11AM-3PM.

ME WANT COOKIE!! ME EAT COOKIE!! ”OMM-nom-nom-nom…“
Blue and fuzzy with an insatiable appetite, Cookie Monster has always been my absolute favorite Sesame Street character. I can relate to his voracious appetite and sympathize with his addiction to cookies. It’s no wonder Cookie Monster, the most iconic, lovable muppet ever to be created, makes the perfect spokesperson for our cookie contest!
Designed for both cookie addicts (like Cookie Monster) and for those who stand tall and proud by their superb baking skills, LumDimSum and The Hutong have teamed up to host our first ever Cookie Monster Charity Bake-Off. We’re inviting Beijing’s best bakers to compete for the top 20 spots for our Cookie Monster Competition and all of Beijing’s cookie-munching sweet tooths to determine which cookie would make Cookie Monster most excited.
The concept is simple. The Hutong will be hosting a Charity Bake-Off to indulge Beijing’s most avid cookie monsters by showcasing some of Beijing’s Best Bakers to support a wonderful community charity – a non-profit called Bridging Education and Mobility (BEAM).

From Odessa to Casablanca, The Hutong’s Global Hanukkah Feast keeps the spirit of joyful feasting alive post-Thanksgiving week of turkey galore.
Taking place this Thursday, December 5 from 7PM-9:30PM, this feast is full of family favorites, “the culinary culmination of two Jews from different backgrounds: The Hutong’s Culinary Manager Katharine Schub is a Russian-American Jew who grew up on herrings and schmaltz and Yves’ roots are in Morocco and was weaned on the beef shank and chickpea stew deemed dafina, the most famous Jewish Moroccan dish”.

Riding Alongside Fujian’s Tulou Fortresses
I recently had the privilege to tag along as supporting staff for The Hutong Travel’s newest eco-cycle bike ride adventure through one of the greenest corners of China – the fantastically beautiful Fujian province. Hands down one of my new favorite places in all of China, Fujian is a treasure trove of natural beauty, history and culture all rolled into one wonderful package.
Having experienced this unique cycle destination once, I already can’t wait to go back. Fujian is not one of those places you check off your travel list after having been there once and never look back. It’s a place I would happily return to again and again. Like a good film, I can imagine that multiple trips will allow Fujian to reveal itself more and more each time, allowing me the opportunity to catch all the small details I may have missed the first time around. And like a love that grows fonder with age and understanding, I can already see myself developing a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of Fujian and a desire to preserve and protect this relatively remote and untouched region of China.

One-Day ONLY Charity Pop-Up Boutique Marketplace at The Hutong
Started by the lovely Sophia McKinnon three years ago, this annual Charity Pop-Up Marketplace will be featuring rack after rack of vintage, second-hand, and ready-for-a-new-home clothing for your rifling pleasure.
“I started it three years ago as a fundraising initiative for a friend. There were hardly any shops where you could buy good quality second hand clothing, and I thought combining it into a one-day effort with food, drinks, music etc would draw a concentrated effort. And it did which was just so exciting. Clothing donations poured in from all over the city & it meant there was fantastic variety. People bought all sorts of things they never would normally. Someone got an Armani evening gown for RMB 50, and last year a guy walked away with a pair of green leather Gucci moccasins for 100 kuai. So there is swagger for all.” - Sophia McKinnon, Creator of the Annual Charity Pop-Up Shop Marketplace
