Hutong and Great Leap Harvest Fair: Tianxianyu

Enjoy the Great Outdoors with The Hutong’s Harvest Festival with Great Leap

This Saturday, October 24th, The Hutong is teaming up with Great Leap Brewing to host Beijing’s Harvest Festival.

In a charming little village called Tianxianyu located just below the Mutianyu and Jiankou section of the Great Wall, The Hutong and Great Leap gang will be sharing one of their favorite escapes just outside Beijing for a full day of BBQ, craft beer and games.

“To celebrate a bountiful harvest, we will be barbecuing pigs and fish, pouring Great Leap harvest-themed beers, competing in old-school field day games, and cap it off with campfire stories around a bonfire. No matter how you spend the day, it’s a great way to enjoy a day with family and friends.” – The Hutong

JUE 觉 Music + Art 2015: Creative Market

 Snapshots from JUE’s Creative Market

Yesterday saw one of the most popular JUE 觉 Festival events thus far – their Creative Market featuring over 80 food and creative booths!  This family-friendly event drew in massive crowds to LANNG Art Center (just southeast of Guomao) and was a weekend highlight for many.

Running between The Bookworm’s Literary Festival events and other happenings around town, I was only able to swing by for an hour in the later part of the afternoon to check out the many creative stall, snap a few photos and grab one of the very last Nori Bagels by Migas + Traitor Zhou‘s (something I’ve been keeping my eye out for all week – see pics below).

In addition to all the creative and boutique vendors selling unique gifts and crafts, they also hosted workshops that introduce participants to: Contact Improv, Salsa dancing, Poi, NIa, along with musical performances, square dancing and body-painting. From what I saw, square dancing with the Yellow Weasels was a big hit and of course all that great food – Cuju, Rager Pie, Big Bear Baked Goods, etc. I’m actually relieved most of the food was sold out by the time I arrived as I definitely would have gone to town at each and every stall if I had the stomach space.

Pakistani Dinner Spread at Khan Baba

Khan Baba came highly recommended to me by someone who was born and raised in Pakistan and now resides with his family in Beijing. After asking others and hearing nothing but positive remarks, Khan Baba jumped to the top of my restaurant hit list.  Ready with an appetite for a full spread after my role model Chef Reshma Khan (who teaches Indian and Pakistani cooking classes at The Hutong) gave me a list of her favorite dishes to try there, I’m happy to introduce fellow foodies to try Khan Baba Pakistani Restaurant.

Located on the top floor of the sadly desolate Sanlitun SOHO, Khan Baba is definitely a destination venue for people who are not fussy about a flashy entrance or dazzling ambiance and all about tasty and authentic Pakistani cuisine. For those who work nearby, take advantage of their awesome lunch deal. Monday through Friday, Khan Baba offers a big lunch buffet for only RMB 55 per person (will need to come back and LDS that).

This coming Sunday, December 7th, The Hutong Community & Culture Center is hosting one of my all-time favorite events: Pies & Ales Night which brings together two independently awesome things that pair together for an even more remarkable match-made-to-be.

Homemade Australian meat (and dessert!) pies come courtesy of Two Guys and a Pie will be serving up loads of their popular classic “Slow-Loving Aussie” meat pie made from 100% pure beef brisket, fried onions in a slow simmered, homemade beef reduction, their popular Honey-Soy Chicken Pies, Chicken Cream Sage Pies, a vegetarian option and, last but not least, their irresistible sweet apple pie to top you off for the ultimate pie feast.
