Even Cupid Has a Price: Charity Dating Auction

Spice up your winter blues with a Charity Dating Auction, raising money for the non-profit organization Compassion for Migrant Children.

20 of Beijing’s eligible bachelors/bachelorettes are auctioning themselves off all in the name of doing good and raising money for the children. And the actual dinner dates themselves are all sponsored by Beijing’s very generous, popular restaurants including Red Capital Club, Capital M, Kagen, Black Sesame Kitchen, Modo and Terra to name a few.

Bids start at RMB 100 per person and the highest bidder wins the highest value date, which is ride in Madame Mao’s limo followed by a dinner for two and two bottles of wine at Red Capital Club (valued at approx. RMB 3,300).

Proceeds from the auction and a portion of the bar proceeds will go to Compassion for Migrant Children (CMC), a local organization that provides social and educational programs for the children of migrant workers. For more information, check out their website, www.cmc-china.org .

Chi Fan for Charity Launch Party

With a little more than one week before the big date, Chi Fan for Charity is hosting a Media Launch Party at Touch Bar (Westin Chaoyang) this coming Thursday, October 28.

Background on Chi Fan for Charity:

One of the strongest charity events of the year, Chi Fan for Charity has gathered 33 of the city’s top restaurants to simultaneously host a table of ten people for a minimum three course meal and wine. The restaurants are donating the food and drink for free, so your payment for the meal goes direct to three, genuinely great local charities (Prevention Through Education (HIV/AIDS Awareness), Dandelion School and Rural Women’s Charity, a practical skills training School for Migrant Women). This event is perfect for people who want to enjoy an exceptional meal while contributing to worthwhile causes by “eating for charity”.
Participating restaurants include everyone from Maison Boulud, Capital M, the entire Hatsune Restaurant Group (Hatsune, Kagen, Kagen Teppanyaki and Karaiya Spice House), Bei & Sureno in the Opposite House, Modo, Red Capital Club, The Courtyard, and many many more.  Tickets are available from the website but better hurry as many tables are already sold out and the rest are selling out fast.

Bringing together local opinion leaders, celebrities and other charitable-minded individuals to raise money for worthwhile philanthropic causes, Chi Fan for Charity is one of the strongest charity events of the year.

Last year, Chi Fan for Charity raised over RMB 100,000 for The Dandelion School, a non-profit middle school for children of low-income migrant families.This year, Chi Fan for Charity will support three local charities:  The Dandelion School, Prevention Through Education (HIV/AIDS Awareness) and Rural Women’s Charity.

Beijing’s top restaurants are each donating a table for ten valued at RMB 500-1000 per seat.  People who want to enjoy an exceptional meal while contributing to a worthwhile cause can sign up for a seat at their restaurant of choice or preferred table host and “eat for charity”.

Each guest is treated to a special set dinner menu with a table host who is engaging and dedicated to making a difference here in China.  Table hosts this year include the talented actor and film director Chen DaMing, Hatsune Restaurant Group owner Alan Wong, CCTV host James Chau, Bespoke Beijing Founder Sarah Keenlyside and AAB Founder Tom Pattinson, Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer H.S. Ignite the “Red Capitalist” in You

If you’re a regular follower of LumDimSum, then you probably know that I’m normally ALL about the food. Restaurant reviews are usually dominated by food shots, but upon visiting Red Capital Club for the first time, the beautiful, traditional courtyard space and the authentic, historical furniture and decor can not be ignored.

“It’s easy to feel nostalgic at Beijing’s Red Capital Club. Communist manifestos cram shelves, photos of the Chairman and Politburo pals packs walls, and the seating is in stuffed chairs from Marshal Lin Biao’s office.” – FORTUNE

After enjoying a pre-dinner drink in the bar & lounge area of the restaurant, we were ready for our 2-person set dinner menu.

For starters we were served a cold tofu appetizer dish presented in the shape of a heart followed by a bowl of Hot & Sour soup. Next came the “Behind the Silken Fan” Asparagus dish, “Gong Bao” Shrimp, and “The Great Khan’s Choice” Mongolian Lamb Spiced with Sesame dish. As you can see with the photos below, each dish was served with meticulously well-thought-out presentation.  Highlights of the meal was the Gong Bao shrimp and Hot & Sour soup. Overall though, each of the dishes’ main draw was still the aesthetic over taste.

Best Part:

• The traditional Chinese courtyard ambiance and historical artifacts decorating the restaurant lounge and bar space.
• Each dish is uniquely and beautifully presented.
• The Gong Bao Shrimp was the highlighted dish of the meal.
• A perfect venue to bring out-of-town guests.

Comments:

• The two of us ordered the set dinner menu for two so we did not try much of a variety or order off the regular menu, but my overall impression of the food is that it is very mediocre and temperature is not as hot as it should be (my guess is that they take so long to work on presentation of the dish, that takes priority over its temperature).
• Overall, the main draw and attraction to Red Capital Club is definitely its decor.
• Advanced reservations are generally required.
• Expect to see a lot of out of town guests and tourists.
