Beijinger Awards_Hatsune

On Monday, March 21, Hatsune took home Best Japanese for the 7th year running at theBeijinger’s Reader Restaurant Awards!

Considering this was theBeijinger’s 8th Annual Reader Restaurant Awards, that’s pretty much a perfect record.

Congratulations to Alan Wong, owner of the Hatsune Empire, for holding it strong and staying on top of the game 7 years straight.  That’s gotta be the longest-running record in town!

Get excited because this year Hatsune will be celebrating its 10 year anniversary in August 2011. If you thought Hatsune’s 9 year anniversary party and Chi Fan for Charity After Party was wild last year, you are in store for a treat this coming August.  Stay tuned for details….

While many of this year’s winners are very deserving of their awards, I was disappointed to see a few of my favorite restaurants without any recognition – Bei (in the Opposite House), Black Sesame Kitchen, Karaiya Spice House, and Madame Zhu’s Kitchen to name a few.  And I am really fed up with repeat winners  - Annie’s winning Best Italian (come on people, it’s not best delivery service), Ganges for Best Indian (really not that great), and Element Fresh for Best American, Best Sandwiches, and Best Affordable Brunch? I only approve of their smoothies and salads and boycott the rest.

CW 2010 Reader's Choice AwardsUnlike theBeijinger and Time Out magazines, CityWeekend lumps both the Dining & Nightlife Award Categories into one evening rather than split it up into two events. And for the first time this year, CityWeekend changed it up and actually kept the vote count visible to the public and made sure that every voter had a validated CW User Name Account.

If you are interested in comparing results, check out theBeijinger Restaurant Awards Breakdown posted here.  Time Out’s Restaurant Awards Breakdown is posted here.

Collecting Hatsune's Award for Best Japanese

Collecting Hatsune's Award for Best Japanese

LumDimSummary of Beijinger Restaurant Awards:

Best Part:

  • iF Juice was a sponsor!  The most thirst-quenching, delicious fresh juice available in Beijing! I’m kind of obsessed.
  • Alan Wong brought up baby Mason to collect his award for Best Japanese (6 years in a row!)
  • Cheese by Yellow Valley Cheese is delicious
  • Cherry flavored Beer
  • Foodie Crowd Galore…or just PR people representing restaurants

Comments:

  • Hosts were painfully bad.  Dominic Johnson-Hill of Plastered 8 T-shirts could not pronounce any names if his life depended on it and Ai Wan actually said, and I quote, “Wow! This is extraordinary a woman won Best Chef! Normally chefs are men.  Now, tell me Ana, how old are you?” Someone should censor that woman.
  • Joy Luck provided no food for the event and it was just a very random location for a restaurant awards ceremony.

While many of the winners are very deserving of their awards, I was a disappointed to see Annie’s won Best Italian (come on people, it’s not best delivery service), Ganges for Best Indian (they just happen to have the best locations and marketing), and Element Fresh for Best American, Best Sandwiches, and Best Non-Hotel Brunch? I only approve of their smoothies and boycott the rest.

Pussy Pussy

Posted: December 10th, 2009 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Foodies & Dining Scene | Tags: Budapest, Buffet, Danger Doyle's, Hooters, Hungarian food, Morel's, Purple Haze, Set Lunch Meal | No Comments »

budapestFun Fact:  The Hungarian word for ‘kiss‘ is ‘pussy‘.   I will always remember my Hungarian friend who would end phone conversations with her mother saying “pussy pussy“.

Yesterday, I tried the lunch buffet at Budapest, Beijing’s first ‘authentic’ Hungarian restaurant. The interior reminded me of Morel’s with tables covered  with red and white checkered table cloths and that same “old Beijing Western-style restaurant that’s trying too hard to be authentic.”   Even though there were two other tables of people in the restaurant, it was so uncomfortably quiet, I felt like I needed to whisper. And the music?  Instead of playing some good ‘authentic’ Hungarian music, they were playing top 40 hits for background music – some hip-hop, Christina Aguilera, etc. And they were even selling Hungarian CD’s on a shelf by the door.

After looking at the menu and not really knowing what to order, my friend and I decided to just go for the lunch buffet.

budapest restaurant

Budapest Restaurant's interior shot

For RMB 48, the lunch buffet served:

  • Green Salad
  • Corn & mayonnaise – literally corn soaked in mayonnaise
  • Goulash Soup – tasty, but would be better thicker
  • Pork Ragout – diced up pork in red sauce
  • Gnocchi & bread dumplings  – dry and cold
  • Hunter-style beef – dry beef slices sitting in a bright yellow mustard sauce
  • Marinated Chicken Breast and leg
  • Crunch Duck leg
  • Curdy Pasta with bacon – tasty shell pasta with cheese & bacon
  • Sponge cake with chocolate sauce & lemon sponge cake – disappointing
    Budapest1

I wouldn't mind having a hearty, authentic Hungarian meal here

  • Selection of fruit – watermelon, grapes, melon

I only know the name of these dishes because I asked the waitress to go through the menu and point out each dish that was served at the buffet. No name tags were provided for any of the dishes.  Food was just sitting there and up for grabs.

I think restaurant buffets are such a gamble.

From a restaurant’s point of view:  You want to give customers good value (which we got) considering you are providing customers the opportunity to try a variety of the restaurant’s top dishes off their regular menu for dirt cheap hoping that customers will come back for dishes they remember from the buffet.

From a customer’s point of view: You go for the buffet option instead of ordering a la carte off the regular menu b/c you want to try a

...or maybe here in this castle

...or maybe here in this castle

variety of dishes, especially if it is your first time. Once you have tried the selection provided and if you find that the buffet is not up to par, if you don’t find something you love, a reason to come back, you will not return.

That is the case with Budapest. It’s a shame because maybe the food was not good because it had been sitting out?  Or made in bulk?  Maybe ordering a la carte off the menu would have been the better bet?  I liked the idea of trying some truly authentic Hungarian cuisine, but based on this experience, I just don’t think this restaurant reaches that standard.

Budapest’s website welcome message pretty much sums it up:

welcome

Dear customers,

We apologize for any inconvenience you might have at us. Apparently we cannot guarantee quality. We are working on that the restaurant would run under Hungarian management again.

Review of Budapest: 2nd Floor of China View (same complex as Danger Doyle’s, Hooters, 2nd Purple Haze, etc.) 朝阳区中国红街大厦六号楼二层202室 工体东门对面, Tel: 8587-1028/ 8587-1058

Best Part:

This would work too.

This would work too.

  • Lunch buffet was pretty cheap and lots of food if you’re all about quantity
  • Best part of buffet was Goulash Soup & Shell Pasta with Bacon
  • Service was polite and made the effort to be helpful when I asked questions about what the dishes were

Comments:

  • Quantity over Quality, food was very mediocre at the buffet, which they should just discontinue.  Food was not hot, dry, and just not up to par
  • Big Buffet No-No: Not providing name cards for the dishes provided (we had no idea what we were eating)
  • No picture menu, making ordering a la carte difficult if you are not familiar with Hungarian cuisine
  • Dishes were all very hearty – mostly meat and pasta/breaded dishes
  • Food and Service mediocre
  • Design is tacky and reminds me of Morel’s Belgium Restaurant
  • Lacking restaurant “buzz” and vibes – uncomfortably silent, empty feeling, and listening to hip-hop and Christina Aguilera is not how I would imagine an ‘authentic Hungarian’ restaurant to feel

  • If You Like It Hot

With Beijing’s sudden drop in temperature, what’s better than a spicy meal to warm your winter blues?

If you’re like me and you crave meals filled with flavor and spice, here’s a breakdown of some of my top picks for different styles of cuisine, known to make you sweat:

    1. Best Sichuan – known for its liberal use of garlic, chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns which produces a “tingly-numbing (Ma La)” sensation, unique to Sichuan cuisine.

    • Chuan Ban
    • Yu Xin
    • The Sichuan Restaurant in Solana by Tsingtao Brewery (forgot name)
    • Black Sesame Kitchen

      karaiya beef

Karaiya's Spicy Pepper Diced Rib Eye

    2. Best Hunan – As spicy as Sichuan, but without the numbing sensation. Hunan’s spice is much more flavorful

    • Karaiya Spice House

    4. Best Hot Pot – An interactive, dining experience- you get to cook raw food in a boiling stew (opt for the spicy one)

    • Hai Di Lao
    • Hot Pot on Gui Jie
    • Xiabu Xiabu – a reliable chain of hot pot restaurants

    5. Best Yunan – Spices are not as dominant or as intense as Sichuan or Hunan, but many dishes are quite spicy and diverse.

    • Middle 8th 中8楼 – nice decor and good food with low prices.  I’m quite addicted to their rice wine, and I love that it comes in a big bamboo container.   Always a good option for guests or a casual lunch with friends.

    6. Best Indian – One of the most popular cuisines around the globe, known for its abundance use of spices and herbs, with signature curry dishes.

    • Mughal’s (Indian/Pakistani)
    • Ganges
    • Punjabi
    • Hazara (in Face Bar)

    7. Best Thai – Known for being spicy and hot, the heat is also combined with flavors that are sour, sweet or bitter.  I Thai soupparticularly like the combination of coconut milk in Thai soups and curries.

    • Aroy-D (Shuangjing/Fulicheng Area) – where I was first introduced to Thai cuisine
    • Purple Haze
    • Lantung Thai Bar & Bistro
    • Very Siam

    New Neighbor

After over a year of Banana Leaf in Solana’s Dining & Bar Street existing solely as signs that read “Coming Soon,” it finally opened its doors last week. All-Star Sports Bar & Grill finally has a neighbor!

When All-Star first signed its lease to begin construction a little over a year ago, Solana was a promising new destination, with a Californian style open-air complex with a shopping mall plus Dining & Bar street. Big names including Zara, Nike, Coldstone, Cro Bar, and even a Banyan Tree Hotel was meant to open just beside All-Star & Bling, (which would have been clutch for us to share their abundant supply of taxis for our guests as well).

While All-Star & Bling both opened according to schedule right before the Olympics, all of our neighbors continued to postpone and some actually back out of their leases completely (Banyan Tree).  And the result: Solana suffered the “ghost-town” syndrome throughout Winter 2008 while the Village in Sanlitun quickly made a name for itself and became the new hub for all shoppers and diners.

Fortunately for Solana, spring brought along sunshine aplenty together with more and more pedestrians and consumers, making Solana a better known destination.  Located right along a lake with gorgeous views of Chaoyang Park, Solana was sure to pick up in terms of traffic and word-of-mouth.

For the first time, All-Star now has a new neighbor and the entire All-Star family was anxious to welcome Banana Leaf to our hood. The owners arranged a grand dinner party, a night that quickly turned into a drink off of whiskey and vodka. Banana Leaf was also kind enough to send over some dancing, singing, “man-loving” entertainment.  A warm welcome and an appropriate initiation of Banana Leaf into the Solana neighborhood.

With this week also marking both All-Star & Bling’s 1-year birthday, it’s crazy that it’s already been a year. As one of the original spaces to open on Solana’s Bar & Food street,  it’s been interesting to see the area of Solana develop, fill up vacant spaces and slowly but surely climbing up to its full potential.

    Overall Evaluation:

Banana Leaf (Solana): Brand, spanking new, just opened. But a well-known chain serving up Thai cuisine and a whole lot of live entertainment. Lovely interior, two stories with big private rooms and and lounge bar by the entrance.  Reasonably priced, so I’d recommend going in a big group who can appreciate some “man-love”.

    Best Part:

    • It’s located right beside All-Star Sports Bar & Grill
    • Low Prices
    • Amusing, animated entertainment

    Comments:

    • This outlet in Solana  is much nicer than others as it just opened. There is much better Thai food elsewhere (Lantung Thai Bar & Bistro, Very Siam, Purple Haze) and I’d only go to Banana Leaf if you were looking for an entertaining dining experience for a big group.  Otherwise, it’s just cheesy, mediocre food and service.

    Another recently opened Solana addition:

Invito:  3 stories for 3 venues – Basement is cocktail lounge, 1st floor is a casual cafe serving fresh sandwiches with homemade bread, 2nd floor is a high-end fine-dining restaurant with a great terrace overlooking the lake.

I went for lunch with a friend and had a great sandwich for about RMB 50 and my friend just ordered two scoops of ice cream together with a ginger ale.  Total bill: RMB 160.  Yup, her ice cream and ginger ale were more than double the cost of my sandwich.

    Best Part:

    • It’s located is set right in front of a lake, offering a great patio and an upstairs terrace to oversee the great view.
    • Nice selection of fresh sandwiches, breads, and desserts
    • Impressive wine selection with machines that preserve wines after opening, allowing all bottles to be served by the glass
    • Food is excellent, along with presentation

    Comments:

    • I will be interested to follow Invito’s development. Already a lot of word-of-mouth talking about Invito being a great restaurant with great food. Just remember you’ll be paying a very pretty penny for your meal…even if it is just ice cream and ginger ale.

    Wednesday Night Drinking

1st Stop:  Sake Tasting at Morio

Perks from my job: Alan inviting me to tag along with him to a sweet Sake Tasting at Morio (Hotel G).  It’s quite perfect timing that the great Taka Yamamoto chose this particular time to host a Sake Tasting at Morio – while Alan and I are in the midst or sorting out all the details for Haiku’s Sake Tasting on August 12!

Alan and I are both a little puzzled upon arrival as we are seated at a 2-person table, expecting that we’d be sitting together with a group in an isolated section for the sake tasting. I guess it was not meant to be a group thing.

Taka was great to introduce some very fine and exclusive sakes for the tasting – we tried 5 different sakes, which were paired with the first 5 courses (7 in total).

Just to give you a taste of what we were served:

1st course: 3 Appetizer Sampler included beef tenderloin in fresh spring roll, two kinds of beans puree, paired with sake marinated Hirame

2nd course: Cyu-toro Maguro carpaccio + Oyster with sea urchin, caviar and quail egg – big WOW

3rd course: Grilled Agu fish (kind of creepy to eat)

    4th course: Braised Veggie Dish

5th course: Scallop & Sea Urchin Tempura

    6th: Rice in Soup

7th: Watermelon Jelly with Vanilla Ice Cream ** ridiculous, perfect ending to the meal

As great as the meal was, it was good for us to attend another sake tasting to learn from them and tailor our’s to fit Haiku and our specific clientele.

If you are interested in attending, you can sign up by sending me an e-mail, see details below. Please keep in mind that seating is limited.

    2nd Stop: Purple Haze Bistro

After a 7 course meal at Morio and more food at Dan’s local Hunan Spot by 7-11 at Shuangjing Qiao, we head to meet friend at Purple Haze (by Hooters on Gongti Bei Lu) and was reminded that this is a great spot!

    3rd Stop: Vics 威克斯

I don’t get Vics. Maybe it’s just me, but I doubt it.  I always come randomly (through invitation or spontaneously), but whenever I do, I’m dumbfounded.  And since I’ve been to Beijing, it has changed again and again.  But not just through renovations, it changes all the time, as does its clientele.  You definitely see some of the same faces who call Vics their home and are there on a daily basis, but I love to just walk around in Vics and soak in the scene.  As great as it is to come to Vics at 5am after Bling closes, it’s almost more entertaining to go to Vics sober on a Wednesday night.

While it was cool to make rounds and greet the usual suspects, it was quite sad that someone from Vics actually came up to me and said, “Hey! You work at Bling?  You can’t be here!”

    “Why?”

    “Because you work at Bling.”

    ‘So?”

“I’m going to tell on you.”

    Seriously?  Seriously. Nice one Vics.

Best Part about Vics: It’s consistently full Wednesday–Saturday nights.

    Comments:

Wait staff pours out your bottle as quickly as possible and if you leave the table for a split second, your glasses (and the rest of your bottle) will be gone.

They are Haters of Bling, which is sad, we should be friends.
