Family Photo Op at theBeijinger’s 9th Annual Reader Restaurant Awards

On Monday, March 19, 2012, theBeijinger just celebrated its 9th Annual Reader Restaurant Awards Ceremony at the Hilton Beijing.

Taking place from 11:30AM-2PM, the restaurant awards got my week off to a great start with a nice break on my mid-day on Monday with more food, sweets and ice cream I could have hoped for.  I was most impressed with the chocolate covered strawberries, chewy cookies and desserts by Sweet Tooth. I’m just thankful I had the self-control to resist drinking from the free flowing beer, wines, cocktails sponsored by Grand Marnier, Chimay, Leffe and Hoegaarden.

Always a grand affair, this year seemed bigger than ever with a very large crowd of both F&B big-heads and die-hard foodies. And it makes sense considering the amount of restaurants that were nominated and the strong readership who submitted ballots (thanks to social media platforms like Weibo, theBeijinger was really successful in reaching a broader audience this year).

“During three weeks of voting, over 5,000 readers and consumers cast ballots in 50 different categories, for over 250 nominated restaurants.”

That’s right- 50 categories and 250 nominated restaurants!  I was wondering how they were planning to read through 50 different categories (would be a nightmare to list off so many winners for so many categories) so I was relieved to find that this year, they displayed 30 of the 50 categories in the winding hall into the main event space.

So right off the bat, we were given the winners for the majority of the awards. It was so unexpected to walk into these displays without expecting to see so many announced in advance. Running around to find the categories Hatsune was nominated in, I was beyond stoked to discover Hatsune won Best Japanese for the 8th year in a row and Hatsune also won Best Decor (Hatsune Sanlitun) and Outstanding for Best Business Lunch (Mosto won this one!).

Other Big Winners from the 9th Annual Awards Ceremony Include:

  • Maison Boulud – Winning 7 Awards in total –  Best French, Best Service (Non-Chinese), Best Wine List, Best for a Romantic Meal, Outstanding for Impressing Visitors, Outstanding Place for a Celebration and Outstanding for Restaurant of the Year (Non-Chinese)

  • Da Dong – Restaurant of the Year (Chinese), Best for Impressing Visitors (Chinese) , Best Beijing Duck, Outstanding for Best Service (Chinese)

  • Home Plate Bar-B-Que – Restaurant of the Year (Non-Chinese), Restaurant Personality of the Year (Seth Grossman), Best New Restaurant of the Year (Non-Chinese), Best American, Outstanding for Best Value for Money,

  • Nanjing Impressions – Best New Restaurant (Chinese)

Biggest Disappointments:

  • Annie’s gets nominated for Best Service?  Seriously people?  Have you even eaten in the restaurant or are you just getting delivery to your home?  If we’re talking about best delivery service, GungHo! pizza wins hands down

  • Tairyo Teppanyaki wins Best Place for Celebration?! I get that their “all-you-can-drink-and-eat deal” may draw you in at first, but the food is such low quality and everything tastes the same! Really surprised by this one.

  • Blue Frog for Best Burger – they hav e a great two-for-one deal on Mondays, but there is definitely better burgers in Beijing

  • Punjabi Indian Restaurant was not even in the running for the Best Indian category, people need to migrate east of Sanlitun!

  • Seems like majority of restaurants that won are all located in the Sanlitun area.  Wish some of the more hidden gems got more recognition (ie Ai Mo Town for Best Yunnan)

  • Wish Obentos got recognition in some of the categories they were nominated in! They definitely have the best salads in town in my opinion (much better than Annie’s anyway!)

Overall, it’s very exciting to see a small, little authentic American BBQ spot take over the entire awards ceremony!  Beating out big players like Maison Boulud and Hatsune (for Restaurant of the Year) and Temple Restaurant Beijing (for Best New Restaurant), this underdog came out of nowhere and really stole the show!

LDS Vote: The Vine Leaf. Of the restaurants that were nominated, I’m a big fan of TRB, Home Plate, Susu and Obentos, but as they are all new restaurants, I think the only one that’s really ironed out its kinked and have the highest performance success is the Vine Leaf. Each and every dish on the menu is made with so much thought and care, Will Yorke has managed to defy the odds and show Beijingers that English food can be phenomenal!

A Very Merry Kagen Christmas Charity Party for BICCO

Charity Christmas Dinner at Kagen (photography courtesy of Nora Tejada)

On Saturday, December 10, Kagen Japanese Restaurant hosted a Christmas Charity Dinner to benefit the Disabled Chinese Orphans of BICCO (Beijing International Committee of Chinese Orphans) and with about 130 generous patrons in attendance, we somehow managed to reach our goal of raising over RMB 200,000!  That is an insanely high number because that means each person donated on average RMB 1,500!

Originally, the deal was set that for each ticket sold, RMB 500 would be donated directly to BICCO (which was already really generous of Kagen Restaurant), but in the end, owner Alan Wong generously donated ALL ticket sales to BICCO, meaning that the entire ticket sales (RMB 600 each) went to the children of BICCO.

In addition to ticket sales, we also managed to sell a butt-load of raffle tickets (raising RMB 9,400) and many silent auction prizes went for higher than it’s actual value (raising RMB 31,757).

Combining ticket prices, raffle tickets and silent auction prizes together with many personal donations to our cause, we were able to exceed our goal of more than RMB 200,000 and now Amy Zima and her team of dedicated volunteers are looking to expand their rehabilitation program to at least two other orphanages in China!

Punjabi’s Manchu Shorba – Ginger Garlic Manchow Soup (RMB 28)

WARNING my fellow Beijingers: This Thursday, Beijing’s weather forecast predicts temperatures to drop to -11 degrees Celsius.

That is scary cold, but with enough layers/puffer jackets together with enough hours of sleep and an appropriate diet, you should be able to prepare your body for the dramatic drop in temperature.

What’s a proper diet for cold weather?  Probably lay off the ice cream and other cold treats and stick to foods that will warm you up like hot pot and soups.

I recently discovered Punjabi’s Manchu Shorba, ie Ginger Garlic Manchow Soup (RMB 28) last week when I went to meet owner Gireesh Chowdhury with his recent order of candy&caviar’s webstore exclusives.  I was exhausted from lack of sleep, stress and all the things that come from a busy work week and it was clearly written all over my face because as soon as I walked into his restaurant, Gireesh ordered this soup for me straight away and I’ve got to hand it to him as it immediately warmed me up inside out and that night, I slept like a baby.

Thanks to this amazing Garlic Ginger Soup, I was able to get through the rest of the week and make sure everything was in order for my BICCO and Kagen Christmas Charity dinner last Saturday night (which was a HUGE success! – stay tuned for event pics and summary)

Packed with heavy doses of garlic, ginger, and vegetables, this chunky soup is packed with germ-fighting ingredients to boost your immunity system and get you through Beijing’s cold winter months.

“Of all the soups on my menu, this is the one that’s best for winter. It’s got ginger, garlic, veggies, black pepper and a dash of mint – a perfect cure for winter blues.” – Gireesh Chowdhury, owner of Punjabi Restaurant

Finally, medicine that actually tastes good! Well, it’s not technically medicine and as it’s not actually something doctors will prescribe to their patients with colds, but maybe they should!  Anyway, it really did work for me so I figured it would be beneficial to share this dish with my LDS readers and hopefully it will cure your winter blues too!

If you happen to be a vampire/someone who can’t handle garlic, then my second choice on Punjabi’s soup menu is their Tamatar Ka Shorba, ie Tomato Soup (RMB 28). It’s different from your typical rich and creamy American-style tomato soup because it’s a lot lighter with less cream.

Next time you are dining in Punjabi, you must also try my all-time favorite Indian dish – Punjabi’s Baingan Bharta Dish, made from mashed chargrilled whole eggplant with fresh tomatoes and zero oil.

As soon as Thanksgiving is over, the trees, lights and holiday decorations come flooding out as everyone begins gearing up for Christmas and New Years! Hopefully by now, most of you have awoken from your turkey comas and you are in the holiday mind set to begin Christmas shopping and party planning.

There are many upcoming gala dinners, holiday balls and Christmas dinners coming up in the next few weeks, but be sure to mark your calendars and save the date for this event in particular – “Unlock the Future”, which is a Christmas Charity Dinner and Silent Auction that will take place on Saturday, December 10.

We have a goal of raising RMB 200,000 in ONE NIGHT with all funds raised on this evening to be donated to Beijing International Committee for Chinese Orphans (BICCO)‘s Shunyi Orphanage Rehabilitation Program to help support over Chinese orphans and children with disabilities.

Hosted at Kagen Japanese BBQ Restaurant, there will only be 200 seats available and all charitable guests will be treated to 10 dish menus created by Alan Wong and his top chefs at Kagen, a champagne toast and select wines paired with a lovely meal.

Acoustic musician David Mitchell will be performing several different instruments and there will also be other live music entertainment including some Christmas Caroling (just part of the jolly holiday spirit!).

The event will also be featuring great silent auction prizes including Apple products, a private dinner for 10 at Hatsune by owner Alan Wong paired with wines by Wine Republic (valued at RMB 13,000), a 2-night weekend stay at The Westin, a Hummingbird spa package (valued at RMB 7,000), a GungHo! pizza party, handmade necklaces from April’s Adournments, a custom Hutong Tour by Bespoke Beijing, a Punjabi Indian Feast and with many other restaurant vouchers around town.

I always feel so much pressure to bring back home unique, one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts that are personal, practical and something my friends and family can’t purchase in the US.  And I’m pretty sure my fellow Beijingers can relate to me when I say it’s an added pressure I try to avoid until the last possible moment each year before I go home for the holidays.

Granted the Silk Market does offer a million and one things, but the hassle of digging through all the useless crap and the hassle of haggling over prices is a huge turn-off for me, which is why I am so excited about The Gift Charity Bazaar this Sunday, November 20 at The Canadian International School.

Organized by Stage One Productions, this will be their third annual charity gift bazaar (last year brought over 1,100 visitors) and this year shoppers will be able to choose from a range of items displayed by over 50 vendors from around Beijing with vendors all donating at least 10% of all proceeds to helping to support several local charities including The Starfish Project, Care for Children, Bread of Life Bakery, Compassion for Migrant Children, Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village and Bethel.

“Good Eats. Good Times. Good Causes.”

Good food, good company and all for good causes – this really is my ideal event. As a proud member of the Chi Fan for Charity team, I am excited to be a part of such an inspiring event that involves such a strong community of individuals to come together and really make a difference with the selected charities we sponsor this year.

The concept for the charity event is simple. Restaurants donate set menus to the charity, which then charge diners for a specially-prepared meal. Each restaurant is offering at least three courses and two wine pairings for a table of 10.

Who can say no to being a part of such an all-around win-win-win situation?!  If you haven’t already booked your seat at one of the 39 fine dining establishments on board, tickets went on sale this week!

Many of the restaurants are already sold out (Agua, Bei, Barolo, Hatsune, Made in China, Mosto, Nobu, Orchid, Maison Boulud), but there are still 24 restaurants to choose from including Capital M, Susu, Sureno, ROOMbeijing, Modo, Karaiya Spice House, Punjabi, The Courtyard and the highly anticipated Temple Restaurant Beijing (TRB) by Maison Boulud’s ex-GM Ignace Lecleir.

A dining event that’s won Culinary Event of the Year in Beijing in 2010, Chi Fan for Charity has expanded to Shanghai this year (with the help of organizing sponsor Austen Morris) and has set an ambitious goal to raise RMB 300,000 in this one night to be donated entirely to both the Bethel Foundation and New Hope Foundation and is now bringing its theme to Shanghai.

And if that wasn’t good enough, the legendary after-party at Hatsune Sanlitun Branch will be where all diners unite together for boozin and schmoozin with old skool dance tracks by DJ Patrick Yu and drinks will be flowing courtesy of The Wine Republic, Kis Natural Vodka, El Charro Tequila, Tiger Beer and Hatsune.

Veg Out at Punjabi this month of October

October is World Vegetarian Month and Punjabi Indian Restaurant is celebrating with new vegetarian set menus every week this month.  

Owner Gireesh Chowdhury is a vegetarian himself, so I expect all veggie lovers are in a treat this month with delicious vegetable feasts available every day this month.  

One of my favorite dishes on their menu is their Baingan Bharta Dish, a super healthy Indian specialty made from charcoal-grilled whole eggplant and tomatoes. (click here for preview LDS post).  Whether or not this dish is on the special set menu of the week, I highly recommend all diners to order this dish!

Baingan Bharta: A Specialty Dish by Punjabi Indian Restaurant

Every time I go to Punjabi, I am inspired more and more to travel to India.  The food here is phenomenal. Every time I bring a new friend to Punjabi, they are stunned they did not know such awesome Indian food is available in Beijing.

I guess it doesn’t hurt that Punjabi’s owner Gireesh Chowdhury is always spoiling me with off-the-menu dishes and although he will let me look through their new menu, he still offers to help me to order a selection of dishes that leaves me in food-coma-heaven.

The first time I asked for something off the menu, he introduced me to Kathi Rolls which is like an Indian burrito.  A Northern Indian snack, Kathi Rolls come rolled with veggies, cheese or meat stuffed into a rolled Roomali Roti bread (flour is similar to naan bread, but Punjabi can make it with whole wheat naan). Punjabi’s Kristen Kathi Rolls (yep, he named them after me!) are stuffed with either BBQ chicken, lamb and mushrooms or there is also a veggie option filled with vegetables, BBQ cottage cheese, mint and tamarind sauce.

Most recently, he introduced me to a new favorite dish, Baingan Bharta (RMB 42 and pictured above). It’s super healthy as there is no added oil whatsoever.  Made from charcoal-grilled whole eggplant, we then mash the eggplant and then sauté with tomatoes and add a pinch of turmeric and salt.

This aside, he also introduced me to a fried cauliflower dish called Chilli Gobhi which was exceptional along with the Yellow Dal Tadka, the lentil curry featured below.  And although everyone loves a good garlic butter naan, I also prefer the wheat naan option – Tawa Paratha.  And to wash it all down, Punjabi’s got the best homemade Mango Lassi.

Chilli Gobhi: An Indian Chinese street snack: Sauteed Cauliflower in sweet and spicy sauce (RMB 38)

Malai Tikka: Cream marinated boneless chicken with minimal spices, cream and green chillies, and then barbequed in the “Tandoor” (RMB 50)

Saffron Rice: Long grain super fragrant Indian Basmati Rice, slow cooked over night with spices and saffron. (RMB 35)

Yellow Dal Tadka: Split Gram Lentils, slow cooked along with tomatoes and “Tadka” on the top. (RMB 44)
“Tadka” means a dash of “Sauteed seasoning of Indian spices and chillies” which brings out all the flavors to the max!

A home-style whole wheat pancake. Cooked in a non-stick pan, with minimum butter, some cumin seeds and multi-layered, since it is folded and then rolled with a rolling pin. A very healthy and light alternative to standard naan bread!

Beijinger Awards_Hatsune

On Monday, March 21, Hatsune took home Best Japanese for the 7th year running at theBeijinger’s Reader Restaurant Awards!

Considering this was theBeijinger’s 8th Annual Reader Restaurant Awards, that’s pretty much a perfect record.

Congratulations to Alan Wong, owner of the Hatsune Empire, for holding it strong and staying on top of the game 7 years straight.  That’s gotta be the longest-running record in town!

Get excited because this year Hatsune will be celebrating its 10 year anniversary in August 2011. If you thought Hatsune’s 9 year anniversary party and Chi Fan for Charity After Party was wild last year, you are in store for a treat this coming August.  Stay tuned for details….

Belita Jewelry Fashion Show

Last night, Belita’s Grand Opening Party on the first floor of Eric Paris Salon was the talk of the town.

Packed with beautiful people, a mini runway fashion show showcasing their most glam jewelry pieces and live music, guests were treated to wine by Top Cellar, snacks by Punjabi Indian Restaurant and sensationally sweet cupcakes by Lollipop Bakery.

Punjabi has recently released a new photo menu (click here to view) of over 25 pages packed with everything from specialty Indian drinks (they have the best Mango Lassi ever), soups, appetizers, BBQ dishes and combos, curries, vegetarian dishes, rice dishes, roti and nan bread, New Delhi famous street food including Kristen’s Kathi Roll (yup, that’s me!), South Indian dishes, Indian and Chinese fusion dishes, and traditional Indian desserts.

With a million and one options, it’s near impossible to choose out of so many dishes and still get enough variety, so Punjabi’s owner Gireesh has created a “Dinner Teaser” set menu. Perfect for two, the set dinner menu includes a six course menu highlighting Punjabi’s new menu featured items.

Punjabi’s ‘Dinner Teaser’ Set Menu:

  • 2 Drinks: The Cinderella (a super strong Indian cocktail) or Mango Lassi (non-alcoholic option)
  • Tamatar Ka Shorba (tomato soup)
  • Masala Pappadams Appetizers (pappadams with chopped vegetables)

A Northern Indian snack, Kathi Rolls are like Indian burritos with veggies, cheese or meat stuffed into a rolled Roomali Roti bread (flour is similar to naan bread, but Punjabi can make it with whole wheat as well).

Served at Punjabi Indian Restaurant on Lucky Street, Kathi Rolls are not on actually on their regular menu, but they come highly recommended by owner Gireesh and can be specially made by their talented chef from India.

One order gets you 2 Kathi Rolls (RMB 36), which are stuffed with either BBQ chicken, lamb or veggies galore.  Veggie Kathi Roll (pictured above) is filled with vegetables, BBQ cottage cheese, mint and tamarind sauce.

LumDimSum Discovery: Punjabi’s Mango Lassi

punjabi logoPunjabi is by far my favorite Indian restaurant in Beijing, (followed by Tamarind in Marriott Northeast, and then Mughal’s in Nali Patio). And while I highly recommend ordering everything both on and especially OFF their menu (Punjabi’s chefs are excellent and creating tailor-made dishes), one of my favorite things to order from Punjabi is their Mango Lassi.

Let me tell you about Punjabi’s Mango Lassi. It is sweet, smooth, rich in flavor…and best of all, it’s healthy! You finish feeling satisfied guilt-free!

An interesting fact you should know is Punjabi makes their own mango lassi from scratch.

I was so fascinated when I made this discovery, I requested to sit down with Punjabi’s owner, Gireesh Chowdhury, who was kind enough to share with my dear LumDimSum readers his special mango lassi recipe.

  • 220 ml Fresh, Daily Made Yogurt
  • 3-4 table spoons of Alphonso Mango Pulp by Mother’s Recipe (imported from India) – no added preservatives
  • 1/2 Mango Fruit
  • 1 Drop of Concentrated Rose Water (Imported from India)

Directions:

  1. The key to Punjabi’s lassi is their fresh yogurt made daily from scratch. Just to make their yogurt, it takes about 12 hours and since they use yogurt in a lot of their dishes and curries, they will make about 20 liters of yogurt every night. To make their yogurt, they mildly heat Mengniu milk and combine the lukewarm milk together with previously made yogurt, and place in an aluminum container and let it set over night.  “Consistency is key,” says Gireesh. “So make sure the yogurt sets in room temperature to ensure that the taste is not too sour and does not spoil.”
  2. The following day, you can begin to make lassi drinks with the freshly made yogurt. Once you have the yogurt, their second key ingredient is adding 3-4 tablespoons of Indian Alphonso Mango Pulp – imported from India, this is the best brand to make Mango Lassi). I recommend only adding 3 tablespoons so the lassi is not too sweet.
  3. Add a piece of fresh mango and put all the ingredients in a blender.
  4. Last but not least, add drop of Concentrated Rose Water (imported from India). “This final step completely changes the taste of the lassi and no one else does it in Beijing.”
