Long Live Lau Pa Sak’s Savoury and Moreish Black Carrot Cake
Time slows for no man, and Beijing too, slows for no man.
It’s just my luck for Lau Pa Sak 老巴刹 to move locations just a few weeks after I move into the building just next to its original home, south of the Canadian Embassy. When I first saw the original location gutted, I initially thought Lau Pa Sak was the latest casualty of the endless development of the city, but was pleased to hear that it had already found a new home in Sanlitun SOHO. A place I’ve thoroughly enjoyed over the years for a quick and tasty lunch, I went to check out their new digs and make sure that it still lived up to it’s old incarnation.
Sanlitun SOHO constantly strikes me as a place where hairdressers go to have children, who then turn out to be hairdressers. Somewhere in the mess, there are a few places worth visiting (One Pot by SSAM Korean restaurant, that new(ish), jam-packed Hunan noodle spot, and Jian Archery Bar) but they are never particularly easy to find. The same is true of Lau Pa Sak’s new location. On the ground floor, it is located on the south side of Tower 3. Expect to walk in circles because we did too.
Still in a similar design of casual dining, the new Lau Pa Sak is smaller than its previous location, but I don’t think people have quite figured out that they’ve moved and where they’ve moved to so you don’t need to worry about waiting for a table like you had to before.

Load Up on These Fruity Soju Cocktails Every Friday and Saturday
Known for its creative take on contemporary Korean, One Pot 一锅 by SSAM is no one-hit wonder and with a newly expanded menu and weekend drink special, it’s time to head back for more.
Many foodies come crawling back for more of their mouth-watering Roasted Beer Chicken (RMB 118) impressively served standing on a platter filled with golden potato wedges, salad and 3 signature sauces for dipping. It’s not hard to see why people start salivating uncontrollably as soon as they just see the photos. Honestly, unless you’re vegetarian, this juicy, scrumptious plump chicken is irresistible.

BJ FOoDieS Returns to the Reinvented SSAM restaurant now called One Pot
SSAM is not a new restaurant in Beijing, but it’s been reinvented into One Pot 一锅 by SSAM and I’m delighted to share that the BJ FOoDiEs team is hosting their next dinner here on Sunday, August 31st from 7:30-9:30PM.
Though the restaurant’s popular whole roasted beer chicken has received decent media coverage across various magazines and blogs, I still don’t think that this restaurant has reached the mainstream foodie scene so I’m hoping that this upcoming event will make a splash because Chef Andrew Ahn of One Pot by SSAM is a very talented chef who deserves much more credit and praise (this is the same chef that is currently corresponding with Chef Rob Cunningham of EAST hotel in Lido to organize the menu for their upcoming Carnivore Club feast).

Whetting their Appetites with a Traditional Korean Kimchi Workshop
After Executive Chef Rob Cunningham realized his dreams of launching his very own Carnivore Club at his restaurant FEAST by EAST Hotel in Lido, he started off strong with his very first Carnivore Club dinner in collaboration with Guest Chef Yao Yang from Chi Restaurant and Saffron Italian Restaurant (both just across from each other on Wudaoying Hutong, around the corner from Stuff’d). Having presented a very porky menu serving everything from pig’s ears to roasted pork belly and braised pork neck, this exotic menu was the talk of the town.
Next up: Ox Tail
In an effort to help increase awareness of secondary cuts and offal that restaurants no longer commonly use, Chef Rob has continued to hold the torch of this food baby project high and proud. I’m delighted to share the good news that the next Carnivore Club dinner will be served on Friday, September 5, 2014.
