CMV Music Festival Fun
Last Sunday was spent in the sun, chilling out on a grassy hill to live music at the second annual China Music Valley Music Festival (CMV).
This year was a 2 1/2 day music festival spread across the weekend (Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday) and it was the first year music fanatics had the option to camp out all 3 days. From other party goers, I heard that Saturday night was a bit of a nightmare with the rain and apparently there was a brief fire ignited on a nearby hill that naturally caused quite a stir.

My gang of music maniacs only went up on Sunday, but one day was enough for us as we are all mad about Friendly Fires. I even made our caravan listen to Friendly Fires’ albums on repeat the whole hour and a half ride up. I guess you can say that we had our own little pre-music festival party pumping ourselves up to prepare for Friendly Fires.
And the rest of the line-up with British Blonde Bombshell Pixie Lott, popular Chinese rockstar Wang Feng and British soul and R&B star Joss Stone made CMV a trip worth making on Sunday. I was just bummed out that we had just missed my favorite Swedish high-energy aerobics warm-up session by Linus Holmsater of Heyrobics fitness program.

We arrived just before Pixie Lott came on stage. This blonde, British popstar came out really strong with her debut single “Mama Do” and one or two other popular, upbeat tracks, but then the acoustic performance mellowed out with a train of slow tracks (which almost put all of us to sleep) followed by a series of “Motown” cover songs (which was just random).
Pixie Lott has a strong voice and she is really cute, but she hardly moved around on stage (just a little shoulder shake here and a hip shake there) and 80% of what she sang were all her rendition of popular cover songs.

Sunset was gorgeous during Pixie Lott’s performance, but the bright glow of stage lights was also appropriate for the big acts that followed.

The performance we had all been waiting for – Friendly Fires was next up on the YUE Stage and these guys really stole the show.
From lead singer Ed Macfarlane’s ridiculously awesome dance moves to the extravagance of the production throughout the show, Friendly Fires made our trip up to CMV totally worth it and left a strong impression. If anyone had not heard Friendly Fires before that show, they’ve since downloading all their tracks by now.
Inspired by Ed Macfarlane’s dancing skills, I followed in his example by dancing like a lunatic for the hour they were on stage (which says a lot considering I just ran a half-marathon on the Great Wall the day before and my legs were super stiff and sore).
This was quite possibly the best live performance I have ever seen and I’m still basking in post-Friendly-Fires-concert bliss.

A hard act to follow, I felt bad for headliner Joss Stone whose performance paled in comparison to Friendly Fires. She has a strong voice and her own unique style and it was a good thing she was performing on the Main GU Stage of CMV, but it wasn’t enough to keep us past her first 4 songs to stick around to hear any more.

I normally try to make it a rule to be in bed early on Sunday nights, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to meet Friendly Fires in person at the Migas after-party. It was a great event, tons of music heads showed up and the crowd was full of happy vibes. The Migas rooftop was a little chilly, but that was long-forgotten after having the chance to meet lead singer and Dance God, Ed Macfarlane of Friendly Fires. Challenging him to a dance-off crossed my mind at one point, but after meeting him I thought it best not to make a fool of myself in front of my new dancing hero. Mellow, personable, silly (my favorite kind of funny) and super down-to-earth, he rocks and really stands out as the best live performer I’ve ever seen.

Before we say goodbye to 2010, let’s live it up, count our blessings and soak up every last minute before it flies by because before we know it, it’s going to be the start of yet another year!
