The photo above is misleading. Or rather, I should just say it’s a bit cruel because it rubs in the fact that we are far, far away from sandy beaches, sea creatures and a temperature warm enough to wear flip flops without our feet freezing off. But the point of the photo is to inspire Beijingers to up the ante this Australia Day by loading up on even more meat pies, lamingtons, Aussie beer and dance even harder to Aussie tunes to make up for the lack of sunshine and breathable air.
Celebrated annually on January 26, Australia Day is the official national day of Australia, the biggest annual event in the country and you can guarantee that Aussies in Beijing will do it up big this weekend.
Originally, the date marks the “arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the proclamation at that time of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia” (Wikipedia on Australia Day) but now the day is synonymous with community festivals, concerts and citizenship ceremonies.
