Fête de la Musique 2014

Celebrate the World Music Day with FREE Music Events Across Beijing!

Created in France in 1982, the Fête de la Musique aka World Music Day is a day dedicated to the celebration of music and is celebrated in more than 100 countries and its third year being celebrated in Beijing.

“The concept is simple: every 21st of June, on the summer solstice day, musicians and music lovers are invited to meet each other at musical events that liven up the city’s streets. The sharing of passion for music, the mix of musical styles, the discovery of new artists and a festive atmosphere are there every year.” – Beijing Music Day Organizing Team

Curious Cookie Monster

ME WANT COOKIE!! ME EAT COOKIE!! “OMM-nom-nom-nom…“

Blue and fuzzy with an insatiable appetite, Cookie Monster has always been my absolute favorite Sesame Street character. I can relate to his voracious appetite and sympathize with his addiction to cookies. It’s no wonder Cookie Monster, the most iconic, lovable muppet ever to be created, makes the perfect spokesperson for our cookie contest!

Designed for both cookie addicts (like Cookie Monster) and for those who stand tall and proud by their superb baking skills, LumDimSum and The Hutong have teamed up to host our first ever Cookie Monster Charity Bake-Off. We’re inviting Beijing’s best bakers to compete for the top 20 spots for our Cookie Monster Competition and all of Beijing’s cookie-munching sweet tooths to determine which cookie would make Cookie Monster most excited.

The concept is simple. The Hutong will be hosting a Charity Bake-Off to indulge Beijing’s most avid cookie monsters by showcasing some of Beijing’s Best Bakers to support a wonderful community charity – a non-profit called Bridging Education and Mobility (BEAM).

Pick Up Some Handmade Handicrafts at The Hutong’s Winter Fayre

Most of Beijing’s Christmas bazaars and fairs have all been taking place across the city in various embassies and hotels over the past couple weekends, but The Hutong’s Winter Fayre is the LAST Christmas Bazaar of the year.

A culture exchange center, The Hutong is all about connecting Beijingers to local entrepreneurs who have come up with a line of quality, noteworthy products.  So if you’ve missed out on the other bazaars around town, this is your last chance to stock up on Christmas presents to bring back home while also treating yourself to some piping hot cups of vin brulé (mulled wine) and other tasty treats.

“Fayre is an old English word describing a fun gathering featuring a range of locally produced goods made and sourced from, and connected to the local community. Our Fayre is a place to catch up with friends and enjoy the holiday spirit, and promises to be a fun day out for the whole family.”

TURNS

After over 1,000 posts and approaching LumDimSum‘s third year mark, it’s time to get a little sentimental.

This little blog of mine originally started out of curiosity with zero ambition and thanks to a few words of encouragement and a touch of OCD, it’s blossomed into a full-fledged project of mine that I hardly go a day without working on. Like the mother of a child, LumDimSum is something I think about 24/7. Whether I’m stumbling across a newly opened store, testing out a new restaurant or scouring the internet for interesting material and worthy upcoming events, I have LumDimSum at heart and always on the front of my mind.

IWD: Celebrate a World of Wonderful Women

Posted: March 8th, 2012 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Food For Thought, Hot Tips | Tags: Hummingbird Therapeutic Spa Retreat, International Women's Day, LumDimSaying | No Comments »

“A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.”

– Diane Mariechild

All of us, no matter how big or how small, whether male or female — we all owe our lives to a woman so how can it be that in this modern day and age that gender discrimination and sexism still exist? How can there still be so many patriarchal societies that continue to repress and hinder the growth and potential of women? Do they really believe that women are less capable and inferior to men? How can we reach out to the millions of muffled female voices and champion their cause?

Here is a world where women have no human rights, where they have no opportunities to make choices for themselves, where they’re often married before they’re 16, where they’re not allowed an education or even to be seen outside in public with a male member of her family.  Here is a woman to beat all odds and was able to show Afghanistan in a different light, to empower girls to do something forbidden, and to be an advocate for women’s rights.

If you have 13 minutes to spare, see this Tedx video of a very inspiring woman – Shamila Kohestani.

You Can’t Buy Love, But You Can Buy Dinner: Beijing’s Top Romantic Valentine’s Day Dinners

Love is in the air…or so all Valentine’s Day advocates dreamily proclaim. But if you’re not a fan of all that sappy, lovey-dovey nonsense, just look forward to all the extra chocolates and treats that come along with this holiday!

This holiday gets a bad rap because of all the romantic pressure and unnecessary expectations associated with this day, but regardless of whether or not you are single, why not make the most of this day and take it for what it is. I say, think of this day as an excuse to pamper and treat yourself to a special dinner at one of Beijing’s top restaurants and milk this holiday for all its worth (you just have to bear through it once a year)!

You don’t have to be in love to love to eat good food and sweets!

Happy Valentine’s feasting to all my fellow foodies!
