“Five years of being Beijing’s brightest pizza bearers and hardest-trying hangover curers. It’s a huge milestone and we couldn’t be more proud of our little pizza store.” – Gung Ho! Pizza
Gung Ho! isn’t like most pizza stores with their “Dare to be Different” slogan, creative pizza toppings, whole wheat crust option (the first to offer this healthier option in Beijing), and hot pink everything, so it’s no brainer that they’d be unlike others in how they choose to celebrate their big half-decade mark.
Celebrating 5 years since they opened their Sanlitun store branch, they’re launching a handful of month-long specials…“the Gung Ho! way”.

Beijing Welcomes its First Branch of the UK’s Pizza Express
The Beijing branch of trusted UK brand Pizza Express marked its 500th store! Sure, Shanghai may already have 9 branches and another dozen in Hong Kong (majority remain in the UK with a sprinkling in the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia), but with a lucky number like 500, Beijing’s first branch is destined for success (especially if you’re superstitious and believe in the power of numbers). Joking aside, the real question is whether or not the 500th’s Beijing branch of Pizza Express good enough for Beijingers to change loyalties from our city’s tried and tested Annie’s or the beloved Gung Ho! Gourmet Pizza brand or the irresistible thick-crust Detroit-style pizza of Pie Squared?
A down-to-earth pizzeria that is frequented and loved by Brits all over the UK, the story of Pizza Express begins with its founder Peter Boizot-
“It all started with Peter. Gloriously unique. Proud to be different. Peter Boizot didn’t just break the mould. He knocked down entire walls. He brought great pizza to Great Britain. And a great deal more besides. So he’s much, much more than our founder back then. He’s still our inspiration today.”

Frost’s Signature Tacos are a Fiesta in My Mouth
I know Frost is well-reputed for their burgers and their quirky combination of comfort American food alongside a range of nail services, but I have fallen instead for Frost’s terrific tacos and brunch menu.

Back Again and Again for Back Alley Bistro’s Brunch Menu
By Chef Jeff Powell (a talented chef who has previously contributed recipes to Flamme, Element Fresh, Gung Ho! Pizza and the man behind the ever popular burgers at Frost Nails), Back Alley Bistro has made a name for itself on the Beijing food scene as a boutique American eatery that is all about using quality seasonal ingredients in an intimate dining environment where the best seat in the house is with the chef himself.
“Chef designed and run restaurant. 32 seats, menu changes often and according to the best of whats available and seasonal in the market. The menu is small and focused.” – Back Alley Bistro’s “About” Description

Silly Bunnies All Over Suzuki
Whenever I’m working in the Beixinqiao 北新桥 area (at least once or twice a week), you can pretty much pin me down at Suzuki Kitchen between 12:30PM-1:30PM. Suzuki Kitchen is a down-to-earth little Japanese restaurant that has recently exploded on Dianping with positive reviews praising their quick service, relaxed atmosphere and affordable prices and I totally agree. It’s simple, it’s cute (little decorative bunnies in every direction you look), and it’s great value.
They currently have a handful of branches around the Gulou area including Mao’er Hutong and Xiao Ju’er Hutong near Nanluoguxiang. I believe this Beixinqiao branch is their newest location (the one I frequent most often), is tucked just behind the southeast corner of Beixinqiao subway station entrance.
I can’t seem to get enough of Suzuki because it just one-ups every other lunch option available in a 5-minute walking radius. There is an entire strip of small local restaurants within walking distance to choose from on the Dongsibeidajie 东四北大街 and Yonghegong 雍和宮 street, but before Suzuki came along, we found ourselves regularly ordering office deliveries from either Gung Ho! Pizza or Biteapitta (via Jinshisong Delivery Service). Though many of the local Chinese restaurants in the area are all relatively cheap and quick, they always left us feeling groggy and unhealthy. Suzuki is also quick, easy and cheap (we’re talking as low as RMB 30 for a whole set lunch meal), but most importantly, it’s also quality. These are all components that make Suzuki such a solid option for the little Beixinqiao neighborhood.

MMMM!!! What a Face!
A day to honor children globally, Children’s Day on June 1st has been celebrated since 1950 by the Women’s International Democratic Federation who mark this day as the International Day for the Protection of Children.
Gung Ho! Pizza (GHP) has lots of little friends and fans and and giving all kiddies a steal on all kids combos (only RMB 30 each!) and a chance to enter a draw to win their very own kids pizza party for up to 6 kids!!
The best kind of party for kids, I think these photos below say it all.
