Crazy ’bout DJ Craze

DJ Craze with DJ Wordy

DJ Craze returned to Punk tonight for Round 2 after an amazing performance on the 4th of July this year.

Considered by many to be the best turntablist ever, DJ Craze has won the DMC championship 3 times in a row and on top of that, he also won the DMC team competition twice with A-trak.

After Qbert spun BLING into a frenzy last Wednesday, I was curious to witness Craze throw down at Punk.

Kickin’ it with Punk’s resident DJ Saul D, Craze was such a cool guy and as soon as he started his set, people hit the dance floor…and didn’t stop.

RESPECT for RAH ZEL

Going all out with an almost 2 hour performance, RAH ZEL killed it @ BLING last night. Destroyed.

DJ JS-1 & The Champ Himself, RAH ZEL

People go nuts when they see his famous youtube video clips of “If Your Mother Only Knew” – see here. And unless these people have seen RAH ZEL live, they have no idea. For those who witnessed his performance last night, you can all agree that the videos do not do him justice.

Described as creating his own ‘orchestra’ creating individual musical sounds with his mouth, he truly is the beatbox champion of the world.

Even after all the hype around RAH ZEL coming to Bling, last night’s performance still exceeded my expectations.

And it wasn’t just RAH ZEL.

DJ JS-1 was just as impressive, what you call a technician artist.  DJ JS-1 is the world famous turntablist for the rock steady crew, the original, first-ever breakdancing crew.

Solo, JS-1 was cutting with both hands, his feet switching the mixer, and even cutting with his hands behind his back -Making something insanely difficult look so easy to the untrained eye.

Once JS-1 got the crowds pumped, RAH ZEL took over each song that played – solo.

Alone, he performed, “Drop it Like it’s Hot”, “React” by Eric Serman, Wutang Clan’s “36 Chambers” getting everyone in the club to yell: ‘Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nothing Ta Fuck Wit’, Kayne West’s “Gold Digger”, and of course “If your Mother Only Knew”.

Bling’s brought some pretty sick DJ’s over the past year from DJ Spider, DJ Dopey, DJ Shortkut to DJ Mixwell, but this Friday, Bling’s about to bring its most highly-anticipated guest yet: RAH ZEL, known as the “Godfather of Noyze” aka The Human Beatbox.

We Are One

“We Are One” was our slogan for Bling’s 1 year anniversary party.  This was quite fitting as we wanted this event to make a statement that represented more than just Bling’s 1st Birthday.  Beyond reaching our 1 year mark, Bling is #1 (Club of the Year!), and ‘We Are One’ Team.

I was a part of the original All-Star/Bling team- I launched Bling’s audacious advertising campaign, wrote both menus, sourced suppliers for everything from our coat check tags to drink stirs and napkins, and I was on my hands and knees cleaning up the last bits of construction in the club before we opened our doors to the public last year on August 7th, 2008.

One year ago, just before the highly-anticipated 2008 Olympics, Bling became more than an idea, it became tangible, it became a destination for the rich, the beautiful, and the party animals.  In Bling’s first month, we drew in celebrities from Evander Holyfield, Chris Tucker, the German National Basketball Team (who were GIANTS), and since then, we have won the title “Club of the Year” and featured big DJ names from 50 Cent’s Official DJ – DJ Whoo Kid, DJ Spider, and most recently DJ Dopey, the official DJ for Eminem.

All-Star Sports Bar & Grill has been quite a different story.  Unlike Bling, All-Star didn’t take-off straight away.  We had a massive opening on the day of the Olympics Ceremony on 8.8.08, but All-Star’s true success came when one of our owners, Richard Wang, who took it upon himself and his natural culinary skills (no professional experience) to recreate all the recipes for All-Star. Since then, All-Star has made its way to the top winning “Best American Restaurant”, “Best Burger”, “Best Sports Bar”, and “Best Pub Grub”!

What a year!  And it is just the beginning.

I was there before construction even started, I was there to see it open, I watched both venues develop and become what they are today.  And I can’t wait to see what’s next in store for my babies.
