The Hutong’s Gorgeous Rooftop will host their annual Summer Fayre this Saturday, June 11!
The hutongs in Beijing are best viewed in summer when the trees are lush and green and everyone is out and about proudly sporting their Beijing “bikini” (and by everyone, I mean men with their white tanks knotted up and their beer bellies out for all to admire). Oh, the summer months in Beijing are a glorious time of year and somehow always feel far too short so you’ve got to savor them while you can!
The Hutong has got the right idea with their awesome annual Summer Fayre. While everyone knows that The Hutong’s Christmas fayre is the jolliest of them all with their abundant pots of spiced mulled wine and effervescent holiday cheer all around, their gorgeous rooftop has never looked better than at their summer fayre packed with plenty of artisan food items and plenty of sunshine.
“Here comes the sun! Drop by our Hutong to get together, meet old friends and make new ones, and munch and sip in our cozy courtyard. To celebrate all things summer, we will be serving attendees a free glass of our secret-recipe Hutong Summer Fruit Punch. Make a toast with your ice-cold glass, taste gourmet goodies from Beijing culinary artisans and restaurateurs, savor some of the capital’s best local brews, and try out some summertime jewelry and apparel.” - The Hutong

Join Beijing Design Week’s Charity Pub Crawl DRINK’N’ HOPe
Beijing is really coming together for this year’s Beijing Design Week and while I’ll give you an overview of the many sights to see and things to do during this week of creativity on over-drive, I’d like to first bring your attention to this kick-@$$ charity pub crawl – DRINK’N’ HOPe.
19 of Beijing’s most crafty cocktail bars are teaming up to make this city-wide charity pub crawl the coolest thing that Beijing’s bar scene has seen since craft beer became a thing in this corner of the world. Taking place from September 24-27, you’ll have 4 full days (including the weekend) to sample your way through all 19 bars. 4-5 drinks across 4 days is totally doable even for a drinking whimp like me.

Pairing Off-Menu Moroccan Dishes with Wines from Piedmont
Badr Benjelloun, creator of Cuju and Caravan is excited to launch a series of wine/Moroccan food dinner pairings with the first one coming this Monday, June 29th at Moroccan/Cajun restaurant Caravan!
“The Mediterranean region has merged and mixed flavors, tastes and cultures for millenias, across north, south, east and west. On Monday June 29th, we’re doing it again by pairing amazing wines from Piedmont with dishes from Morocco for an unforgettable culinary experience.” - Badr Benjelloun, Cuju & Caravan owner

Time to Toast Cuju for 3 Years of Rum Ragers!
Monday, June 8th marks the 3rd Anniversary of little Cuju Sports Bar & Rummery. From opening back in 2012 as Dongcheng District’s only sports bar in the hutongs to everyone’s friendly neighborhood rummery, they’re ready to celebrate with a week of festivities starting tonight!
“From that first night jitters (on the first game of the Euro 2012) and arguing with neighbours, through landlord problems and staff turnover, we somehow made the 3 years mark.” - Badr Benjelloun
Here’s a day by day play of every discount and super deal you can look forward to enjoying. You’ll find lots of drink deals and sandwich deals depending on the day (expect Wednesdays as they’ll be closed!). And notice the increasing momentum and excitement as we make our way to the grand finale this Sunday, June 14th for a blow-out Hutong afternoon BBQ with free flow Kirin beer, sangria and mixers! Price is RMB 150 per person, just remember to help Badr out (with managing as best he can given the limited space in a small hutong) and RSVP in advance if you want to join!

BJ FOoDiEs Take Over Bottega this Sunday, May 24th
One of the biggest perks about eating with the monthly BJ FOoDiEs charity group dinners is their ability to book out very busy, popular restaurants and seek out places that are truly worthy of a room full of hardcore foodies. Last month’s charity dinner was hosted at the stunning hutong authentic Vietnamese restaurant Susu and this month they’ve managed to lock in one of the most talked about new Italian pizzarias in town – Bottega!
Though they do pull a wild card here and there in trying out brand new restaurants that are still in soft opening stages and not yet open to the general public, even then it’s more of a sense of privilege rather than taking a gamble. Their March FOoDiEs dinner at Caravan is a perfect example because even though the restaurant had opened on a Sunday just to host the BJ FOoDiEs group and had not been running regular business hours yet, Badr Benjelloun is no amateur with already a successful Moroccan Bistrot, Rummery and Sport Bar Cuju under his belt and a trusted reputation for generous hospitality and a whole lot of fun whenever he’s around (click here for LDS review).
Clearly, the BJ FOoDiEs team have had their eyes set on Bottega ever since they opened this winter and it’s very exciting to hear that one of the city’s most authentic Neapolitan pizzarias is about to show Beijingers how real Italian ought to be. This place is legit and the BJ FOoDiEs team scored an incredible meal deal for those who are lucky (and quick) enough to score a seat.

Moroccans won’t let you walk out hungry
After a quiet Chinese New Year’s break, the BJ FOoDiEs team have woken up from winter hibernation and jump started 2015 with a packed-out dinner party at Beijing’s newest up-and-coming Moroccan/Cajun restaurant called Caravan. Opened just a few months ago by Badr Benjelloun, this is another multi-purpose venue combining the concepts of a soul-food restaurant, wine bar, live music + creative art space hotspot into one. Seems like a lot, but actually it makes perfect sense once you know this is by the same brains and talents behind Cuju Moroccan Bistrot, Rummery + Sports Bar (click here for LDS review).
Still in soft-opening, Caravan actually opened their restaurant specifically for the BJ FOoDiEs crew this past Sunday, March 14 (they normally are closed Sunday evenings). On top of that, they managed to serve up a fully packed house of 50+ foodies to sample their signature dishes representative of both Badr’s Moroccan and Cajun roots. Similar to the lively, rambunctious nights I’ve enjoyed at Cuju, Caravan was so much fun with drink specials all night (house wine that’s friggin’ fantastic), food made with so much heart (the chicken tagine was slow cooked for over 12 hours!) and Badr’s sincere hospitality where he proudly claims – “if us Moroccans can do something right, it’s to never let people walk out hungry!”
