Bespoke Beijing: Hutong Adventures & Cricket Fighters

Bespoke Beijing Hutong Tour via Rickshaws

My family has been to Beijing multiple times so the usual must-see locations (Tiananmen & Forbidden City, Great Wall, Summer Palace, yada yada) have already been checked off.  After traveling in Southern China for a week (Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Nanjing Huangshan, Hangzhou) we only had 3 days left to spend together in Beijing.

As you might suspect, I made them binge on a ridiculous amount of food at every given opportunity, but I also wanted to introduce them to Bespoke Beijing‘s recommended “experiences and experts” so they could see just how capable and uniquely awesome Bespoke’s services are.

One of my all-time favorite tours is Bespoke’s Expert Hutong Tour.  Before I get into details, I should say off the bat that this is no ordinary Hutong tour. I am positive every travel company that exists in Beijing will offer some sort of Hutong Tour with a ride on a rickshaw through Beijing’s famous hutongs around the Gulou and Houhai area, but Bespoke’s Hutong tour is so much more.

“No other city in the entire world has hutongs. What does that tell you? That you should go see them of course! These ancient, labyrinthine alleyways are where ‘real’ Beijing life happens, so to help you navigate some of the most interesting bits, we’ll fix you up with Frank, an old Beijinger who’s lived in the hutongs his entire life.”  - Bespoke Beijing

Having lived in the hutongs his entire life, Frank is the most perfect possible guide to show you through the hutongs and give you a deeper understanding of this fascinating side of Chinese history, culture and show you first hand an authentic picture of traditional hutong life as it once was. And what’s especially impressive and almost incomprehensible is how clear and articulate Frank speaks English.  Very, very unexpected for someone who’s never left his hutong home in Beijing.

Our first stop in our Bespoke Hutong Tour was a visit to a private Hutong museum jam-packed with artifacts from old Hutong life.  As soon as modern China started tearing down old hutongs to build up more skyscrapers, these genius collectors quickly got their act together and started gathering up antique furniture and useful household tools to proudly keep on display for curious visitors to check out.

Fun facts I enjoyed learning about were the various tools used by street salesmen to make a distinct sound to notify hutong communities of their services. For example, it was originally believed to be bad luck to say “cut your hair” in Chinese as hair sounds like the word for “growth” and “development” so who wants to cut short their personal growth and development? So instead of having a barber walk around shouting for everyone to “cut their growth”, he instead walked around with a specific device that makes a distinctive noise that everyone in the community recognizes as the sound that belongs to the neighborhood barber.

Testing & Discovering the Meanings of Old Hutong Sounds

After visiting the hutong museum, we made our way to the Drum Tower to ascend its very steep staircase that leads directly into the main upper level where they regularly do a 5-minute drum performance with four drummers. This takes place every day right on the dot every 30 minutes. We arrived at the Drum Tower with only a minute to spare before the performance kicked off so timing was perfect (thanks again to Frank). Afterwards, Frank explained the traditional methods of keeping track of time to ensure that the drums are consistently reliable and pointed out the direct line outside that leads straight into Jingshan Park and the center of the Forbidden City, the heart of Beijing.

Drum Show at the Top of the Drum Tower

After these two spots, Frank walked us through a local wet market pointing out China’s quirky vegetables, popular spices and herbs, and local specialties like China’s renowned 1,000 year old eggs (that are not really 1,000 years old).

Afterwards, we hopped on two separate rickshaws pulled by two very courteous drivers who whizzed us around the hutong neighborhood, ending at the home of a local cricket trainer.

Walking into this one-of-a-kind home, we were surrounded by talking birds, pet fish, a pet dog and more insects than you’d like to imagine.

Meeting the cricket master was something my dad and brother were most looking forward to seeing in Beijing since my dad actually grew up in southern China playing with crickets as a child. Not only is this an unforgettable experience, Master Liu aka Cricket Liu is a hoot!

“On the quirky scale, this one’s a ten. In China, this is a serious sport and has been for centuries. This is your opportunity to meet Beijing’s most famous cricket trainer (yes, you heard right) and find out all about this ancient practice. You’ll get to meet the clients (read: insects) he’s currently working with, and hear all about the instruments and methods he uses to get them fighting fit. This colourful local character actually trains crickets and grasshoppers to fight in local competitions. A fascinating insight into a bizarre Chinese sport you won’t forget in a hurry!” - Bespoke Beijing

Perfect for both visitors and even Beijingers who are curious about this age-old Chinese tradition and to this day, a very popular gambling activity in China.

Kevin Wallace – People’s Choice Winner of Brooklyn Chili Take Down

You want a piece of my chili?  I bet you do!

On second thought…probably not since I’m an awful cook, but I’ve always wanted to say that at some point in my life. Check!

This coming Saturday, March 24, Great Leap Brewery and Seedicego Productions is teaming up to organize Beijing’s very first Back Alley Chili Cook Off presenting 10 contestants from all around Beijing have claimed to be able to cook some of the best and most inventive chilies in town, using mostly local ingredients.  Whether you’d like to spectate, taste or try your hand at cooking, sign up as spacing is limited and pre-ordered tickets is RMB 100 (instead of RMB 120 at the door).

So aside from the honor of owning Beijing’s best chili recipe, what else does the winner get?

“The winner of the competition will get a page in City Weekend Beijing with their photo and recipe and bragging rights until next year.”

RIDIC Kickball Tourney 2011

Posted: April 26th, 2011 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: A Day In My Life, Special Events | Tags: Birthday Party, Candice Lee, Kickball | No Comments »

This past Saturday, Candice Lee aka C-DICE celebrated her birthday in style by hosting her 4th Annual Kickball Tournament.

A birthday party unlike any other in Beijing (and the majority of the world), Candice’s annual kickball tournament rounds up over 150 friends for a full-on day of friendly competition and non-stop fun.

As Candice so eloquently put it – “what better way to celebrate my birthday than being outdoors in costumes, cocktails, getting silly, kicking, and balls?”

My day started with a pre-tourney pump-up session at 9AM with jello shots and a text from my team captain Philana Woo that read,

“Dear Team: May the bloodz bleed, camp friends cry, wontons fry, cholos chafe and john k’s no name team be a no show. See you on the field!”

RIDIC Teams Breakdown:

With two giant buses shutting players out to the fields at 10AM, the games started after a few rounds of stretching, warm-ups and announcement of C-dice’s house kick-ball rules.

Games officially kicked off around 11am with 6 teams and games set up as run round robin with each game lasting about 40 minutes.

To sum up:

6 rounds of 40 minute games =

7 hours of heckling, beer chugging, spillage, competitive streaks, sneaky SABOTAGE and absolute kickball debauchery

Black Sesame Kitchen: The Not-So-Secret Hidden Gem

Posted: November 9th, 2009 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: A Day In My Life, Foodies & Dining Scene | Tags: Black Sesame Kitchen, Candice Lee, Chinese food, CityWeekend, Dining, Nanluoguxiang, wine | 11 Comments »

A lot of people have heard of Black Sesame Kitchen’s fun and interactive cooking classes or wine ‘n dine dinner parties, but not so many people know that once a month, Black Sesame Kitchen will host a special 10-course traditional Chinese meal + all-you-can-drink quality wine for RMB 150 per person. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Black Sesame Kitchen may not be listed among CityWeekend’s Gourmet Month Restaurants, but it may as well be, considering how incredibly awesome this steal of a bargain is!candice

Hosted by my very favorite event manager, Candice Lee aka C-dice, she really does wonders for this little hutong kitchen. Considering she knows EVERYONE in Beijing, there is always a fully-booked table with all the cool kids in town (foodies who know where it’s at).

This special deal only occurs once a month (typically the first Wednesday of every month), but the cooking classes are a ton of fun and Black Sesame Kitchen is the perfect destination to impress out-of-towners and host private dinner parties whether its a birthday, corporate event or wine tasting.

  • You can indulge in an amazing 10-course meal PLUS all-you-can-drink QUALITY wine for only RMB 150 (special price available once a month)
  • Best dessert EVER: Candied Apples Chilled in Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Everything is cooked right in front of you, making for a really interactive dining experience – Chairman Wang is a culinary genius
  • The wine selection is always superb in taste and quality
  • The service is the best (C-dice is the perfect host, always on top of her game)
  • A great option to host private dinner parties for a group of friends and the cooking classes are really great (*think birthday present for someone who loves cooking and good food).
  • It’s a great place to bring friends or to meet new friends (always a great dining crowd of foodies who share the love for good food and wine)

Comments:

  • Incredibly tricky to find if it’s your first time (but I promise you it’s worth the extra effort – just carefully follow the directions they send to you)
  • You need to learn to pace yourself and prepare for heaps of food that seems to never stop coming (my first time, I made the terrible mistake of overloading on the first dishes and was stuffed by the 5th course – reminder: there are 10! And trust me, you’ll want to save room for their dessert)

Rating: (on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being best)

  • Food: 9
  • Atmosphere: 8
  • Service: 9
  • Overall Experience: 9

The New Kid on the Block: d. lounge.gallery.food

C-Dice & I @ d.lounge

For over a month now, I’d been hearing about the new kid in town – d. lounge (not to be confused with D-Bar in the Renaissance Hotel). After celebrating my birthday dinner at my favorite restaurant Kagen Teppanyaki, I was eager to check out the space and pay a visit to my dear friend Warren Pang (former manager of Punk in the Opposite House), especially after hearing so much about this new bar and considering Tuesday nights are not exactly the most bumping night of the week.

Unsure if it would even be open on a regular Tuesday evening around 11pm, C-dice & I poke our heads inside and walk down a long corridor to find an intimate, high-ceilinged space covered in red brick with a tall, elegant bar against the back wall and funky leather croc sofas and modern furniture throughout.

After speaking to Warren and seeing their drink menu, I was quite surprised to discover that d. lounge has not even officially opened yet!  According to Warren, for the past month, d. lounge is still in its soft-opening stage, offering private gatherings and inviting limited guests while they are still working out some pre-opening kinks and are in the process of finalizing two other sections that have yet to be open to the public.  Warren may call this an “extended soft-opening period,” I call it a brilliant marketing strategy.

In the meantime, d. lounge is now open daily featuring various artwork on its high brick walls that will be changed on a regular basis and a basic drink list with 9 cocktails and 4 regular well drinks priced RMB 50-60.  In the future, the space will serve a bistro-style menu with mini burgers and tapas and the space will also be a hub to feature designer clothing/street wear.

By the same owners as Jazz-Ya and Izaka-ya, d. lounge is located just behind Nanjie on Sanlitun Nanjie and is set to officially open Mid-October 2009.

Best Part:

  • The Bar – its design is original, classy and its very impressive without being imposing
  • Their Kiwi & Strawberry Caipiroska is my new favorite drink
  • The design of the venue is modern, fashionable, and very New York without being pretentious
  • A small space with super high ceilings makes it easy to fill with a cozy, intimate vibe without feeling claustrophobic (I love red brick walls)
  • Warren is a fantastic host & bar manager, it’s no surprise he’s got such a loyal following from Punk – he’s personable, welcoming, and his concept of keeping d. lounge in this “pre-opening stage” while being open to public is ingenious PR. Well-done mate!

Comments:

  • In my 2 hours stay, my legs were eaten alive by mosquitos
  • I am eager to see d.lounge officially open – to see the rest of the unopened space, to taste their bistro menu, see what type of designer clothing they choose to feature, and above all, the type of music they will play (As much as I like the crowd and design at Punk, I never cared for the music).
