4th of July Independence Day Celebrations All Weekend
Celebrated a little more loosely on this side of the globe, America’s Fourth of July Independence Day celebrations in Beijing will be spread into the weekend with parties starting this Thursday, the 4th of July til late Saturday night.
A day to commemorate the day America declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, I applaud the fact that we Americans celebrate our nation’s history, government and traditions with outdoor BBQ’s, picnics, fireworks and water guns. All equally important icons of our great country’s deep and meaningful culture, you can also get in the American spirit by celebrating all weekend long at any of the recommended fine establishments listed below.
From open air cinemas and American-themed pub quizzes alongside big BBQ parties, there’s plenty going on to remind you just how awesome it is to be an American.

Stepping into The Big Smoke
Let me begin by managing your expectations.
The Big Smoke is not Home Plate Bar-B-Que. From tasting my way through their menu, the interior design and vibes, this is something very different even if both restaurants specialize in *BBQ.
*I have just been corrected – The Big Smoke is not an American BBQ restaurant, but “a menu drawing on Latin influence and featuring a wood-fired barbeque, known as an Asado (the traditional Argentinean pit of fire).”
That being said, I came to dinner at The Big Smoke not knowing what to expect. I hadn’t done any prior research and I hadn’t even planned on coming here for dinner. I happened to be in the area and our dining choices boiled down to three: Frost nails (I hear they serve some killer burgers), Uncle Otis or The Big Smoke. I haven’t been to any of these three and I’ve been meaning to check all three off my restaurant hit list since I’ve heard good things about all. I knew Big Smoke was the newest of the three and since we heard it’s the “sit-down” brother of the “take-away” Uncle Otis with a larger menu selection, we went with it.

It’s the Fourth of July which marks America’s Independence Day, a day to commemorate the day we declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. I love that Americans celebrate the history, government and traditions of the United States with outdoor BBQ’s, picnics, fireworks and water guns.
I suppose any excuse to surround yourself with good friends and good BBQ is a good enough excuse for the entire American population. Makes perfect sense!

“Beer lovers, these beers are handcrafted, flavorful, and unique to Beijing.”
After a successful first event at Susu, Slow Boat Brewery be hosting its second pop up event at Home Plate BBQ this Thursday, November 3, 2011.

“Smoked for ten hours, the pulled pork offers a moist, juicy bite that even the most toothless hillbilly could chew his way through.” – theBeijinger
