Lost & Found in China: Film Fundraiser for ICEF Rugby

Check Out Two Back-to-Back Events to Support ICEF Rugby!

Last year I had the pleasure of meeting the bright and inspirational kids who play for an inner city foundation in Los Angeles, California called ICEF Rugby as part of a Hutong education program. We spent a few days showing them Beijing highlights as part of a two-week China trip (Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong) for their rugby program in March 2013.

I was so impressed and moved by this group of students that we rallied all our friends in the rugby community and beyond to support China’s very first screening of their award-winning documentary, “Red White Black & Blue” which was filmed on the group’s previous international trip to New Zealand for a U16 tournament. A beautifully shot film, it showed the story of the team’s leaders and a few of the players who rise above their circumstances of growing up in the inner city, and travel abroad together to play rugby in a land where rugby is its national sport.

But now that the second film of the award winning Red, White, Black & Blue series is out (check out vimeo film trailer HERE), ICEF Founder and Rugby Coach Stuart Krohn is heading back to Beijing to support my two back-to-back fundraising events with proceeds being donated to ICEF Rugby.

Nola Restaurant

With the charity dinner concept of a different restaurant and charity each month, it’s quite unusual for BJ FOoDiEs will repeat restaurants, but Nola is an exception for a few reasons:

1. The last BJ FOoDiEs dinner at Nola was back in 2011

2. Brandon Trowbridge is an incredible chef with a soft spot for BJ FOoDiEs

3. Nola’s terrace, which is pretty perfect for this time of year!

Cookie Monster Charity Bake-Off Sampling

LDS + The Hutong Team Up to Create Beijing’s 1st Cookie Monster Charity Bake-Off!

On Saturday, December 7, The Hutong Community Center hosted its first ever Cookie Monster Charity Bake-Off!

A creation by yours truly, this event showcased many of Beijing’s Best Bakers (both professional and up-and-coming) to indulge the city’s most avid cookie monsters in an effort to support a wonderful community charity – a non-profit organization called Bridging Education and Mobility (BEAM) that seeks to connect teachers in rural and migrant schools with the resources to help their classrooms succeed.

Through the event’s raffle ticket sales, a portion of the total bake sales throughout the day and entrance tickets, we raised over RMB 7,560 to fund at least 5 upcoming education projects for BEAM – to support and provide resources to educators in rural and migrant schools in China for BEAM!

BJ FOoDiEs: Dedicated to the Disabled Charity Feast

Pak Pak Thai Restaurant

Pak Pak Hosts the Final BJ FOoDiEs Charity Dinner of 2013

A sister restaurant of Susu Vietnamese restaurant, which also happens to be one of my favorite restaurants in Beijing, Pak Pak is an authentic Thai restaurant based in Wangjing that will be hosting the final BJ FOoDiEs charity dinner of 2013!

I’d normally worry for a restaurant to perform and live up to high expectations with this kind of pressure building up, but after seeing the magnificent 9-dish menu they will be serving up alongside photos of the stunning space, I can’t imagine a better place for the BJ FOoDieS group to treat their die-hard following of foodies for a final 2013 feed!

Although Pak Pak is fundamentally very different from Susu – it’s actually dedicated to an entirely different Southeast Asian cuisine (Thai vs. Vietnamese) and in a completely different part of town (tiny tucked away hutong vs. Wangjing), they still share one essential thing in common – owner Amy Li is behind both establishments which means that authenticity, quality and presentation will be top-notch and worth the effort to get there.
