Enjoy the Great Outdoors with The Hutong’s Harvest Festival with Great Leap
This Saturday, October 24th, The Hutong is teaming up with Great Leap Brewing to host Beijing’s Harvest Festival.
In a charming little village called Tianxianyu located just below the Mutianyu and Jiankou section of the Great Wall, The Hutong and Great Leap gang will be sharing one of their favorite escapes just outside Beijing for a full day of BBQ, craft beer and games.
“To celebrate a bountiful harvest, we will be barbecuing pigs and fish, pouring Great Leap harvest-themed beers, competing in old-school field day games, and cap it off with campfire stories around a bonfire. No matter how you spend the day, it’s a great way to enjoy a day with family and friends.” – The Hutong
Since it is a little bit of a trek outside of the city, all participants are invited to hop on a bus leaving from Great Leap Brewing #45 off Chunxiu Lu, departing at 11AM, 12PM, and 1PM and returning at 5PM and 8PM.
With a whole lot on the itinerary to cover from both agricultural tours of the village and Great Leap’s personal brewery tour (they have their own country brew spot right in TXY!), there will also be various games and races for the whole family and plenty of BBQ and beer for all to enjoy.
LDS catches the full story with The Hutong’s executive director Jeremiah Jenne, who fills us in on how this Harvest Fair came to be, what we can expect to eat, drink and see and why Tianxianyu is one of The Hutong’s favorite places to visit.
LDS: What inspired this collaboration between The Hutong and Great Leap?
JJ: Carl (Setzer, founder of Great Leap) contacted me a few weeks ago and thought it would be fun collaboration. They have a new brewery they are building in the village and wanted to do something fun with the fall season. The Hutong is known for putting on cool cultural events. It seemed like a good partnership.
LDS: Is this a one-off event or are there plans to make this a regular annual event?
JJ: I love this time of year and I’m a sucker for county fairs, harvest fairs, state fairs…any kind of fair. I’m hoping to make it an annual event and grow it next year.
LDS: What are your goals for this collaboration Harvest Fair?
JJ: I’d like to give those of us who live in the city the chance to get out of town and enjoy the crisp autumn air and a little old fashioned country fun.
LDS: Can you tell us a little about the location you’ve selected by the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall? Why did you pick this village and what do you think makes it unique?
JJ: Carl has a relationship with Tianxianyu which goes back many years. He’s been a strong supporter of the community. The Hutong has also been doing educational programs at the same village for several years as well. It’s one of our favorite places to visit.
LDS: What are some tasty BBQ items we can expect to see on offer?
JJ: Pork. Roast pig. On a spit. BBQ Rainbow Trout from the local fish farm. Vegetarians should probably cover their eyes and enjoy some of the salads and cool dishes being prepared by the Hutong staff.
LDS: Which GLB beers will be served? Are there any new craft beers being created for this event?
JJ: Imperial Pumpkin, Honey Ma Gold, Ginger Soda are already on the menu. Probably one of the IPAs as well.
LDS: A family friendly event, what games and activities will be available?
JJ: We’re planning a few old fashioned country games like spoon & egg, tug o’ war. We’ll also have pumpkin decoration and mask painting. Corny? Maybe but also a great way to celebrate the season. We’ll also be leading hikes around the village to check out some of the local farmers (local honey will be on sale) and their products ending at the new brewery (where there will be cocoa for the kids!).
LDS: Top 3 reasons not to miss out on this event:
JJ: 1. It’s rare to get a chance to experience a little bit of americana here in Beijing. Those nostalgic for an old timey country fair (or want to see what all the fuss is about) will enjoy it.
2. Roast Pig. On a spit. That’s just BBQ awesomeness.
3. Plenty of beer and good times.
