Awfully Chocolate’s Expansion into Sanlitun’s Taikoo Li
I didn’t realize what a come back Awfully Chocolate has made until my friend was surprised with a Chocolate Mille Crepe Cake (photo snap below) for his birthday last month. Since this game-changing dessert re-discovery, I’ve been tormented by friends’ photos of repeat visits to the branch in Lido’s Indigo Mall the past few months (Lido is a little bit of a trek since my mode of transportation is by bike), so I’ve sat anxiously waiting for its opening in Sanlitun Taikoo Li Village’s basement floor.
Awfully Chocolate’s Mille Crepe Cake Blows My Mind
Located on the B1 floor of Sanlitun Taikoo Li Shopping Mall just around the corner from Watson’s and across from BHG grocery store, Awfully Chocolate is so much more accessible, but also dangerously close like a siren that keeps luring me back for more. Considering that I’ve already been over 5 times in the past 2 weeks means that this is news worth sharing.
For those who have not heard of Awfully Chocolate before, get excited because Awfully Chocolate is far more than many give it credit for.
Home of the best chocolate ice cream I’ve ever had in my entire life (yes, it’s even better than Haagen Dazs), this place is something that needs to be on your radar if you love chocolate as much as me. Actually, on second thought, even if you don’t like chocolate, you should still try Awfully Chocolate because maybe you’ve only had crap chocolate your whole life and need to know how incredible quality chocolate can be. I’m convinced that Awfully Chocolate has the power to convert any chocolate doubter into a chocolate believer.
Bold statements like that are necessary for bold and brilliant chocolate.
“ is our super premium dark chocolate ice cream made with natural ingredients. It contains a blend of our own chocolate and Belgian dark chocolate (min. 70% cocoa solids), real eggs, fresh milk and pure cream. The low air content makes the ice cream very rich and dense, and it has less sugar than most other premium ice creams. Manufactured in Singapore, it is full of flavour and is perhaps the darkest chocolate ice cream around.” – Awfully Chocolate’s Website
I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for HEI Ice Cream!
Though the current Awfully Chocolate cafe interior design and set-up is pretty swanky, they weren’t always so glam. When Awfully Chocolate first opened up shops in Beijing, they only had a small presence with teeny tiny kiosks around town specializing in a limited menu that really only consisted of 3 types of chocolate cake and chocolate ice cream.
With such a limited menu, they are all about quality over quantity and that is part of their company’s philsophy -
“Our philosophy is simple & unique. The focus is not variety but quality. Our product line is deliberately limited- even today. So we started a cake shop selling only one cake – a simple dark chocolate cake between layers of dark chocolate fudge. Real cake one could bite into, rich in taste yet moist and light. Not just mouthfuls of mousse or cream. Not overly sweet but something you could eat and not feel disgusted with yourself right after. Something you would find yourself craving for regularly and never tire of.” – Awfully Chocolate’s Website
Signature “Super Stacked Chocolate Cake” (RMB 27)
My circle of chocolate-loving-friends all felt like Awfully Chocolate was one of Beijing’s best kept secrets but realized too late that maybe it was too much of a secret when we found out they all shut down simultaneously and without notice. It was devastating to say the least.
But fear not! They are now under new management and what was once little black and white kiosk shops have now morphed into big and beautiful stylish cafes with more space to sit down and fully appreciate your chocolate. And along with the expansion of the venue space, they’ve also created a bigger menu with much, much more than just 3 types of chocolate cake.

Customers in Chocolate Heaven
A few of us just popped downstairs to Awfully Chocolate with the specific mission to grab some dessert for after dinner. While one friend couldn’t resist ordering a White Chocolate Cappuccino (a tad too sweet for my liking) and the Cold Poached Chocolate with Butterscotch Cream (delish!), we also got a box of their signature HEI Ice cream (RMB 29 for 1 scoop, 53 for 2 scoops and 90 for a pint), along with a handful of House White/Black Chocolate Martinis (RMB 75 each) to take away.

I ordered the Dark Chocolate while my friend opted for the White. We both agreed after tasting both that the dark was significantly better. And as lovely as it would have been to drink this out of a martini glass (menu photo below), it was also brilliant to take it away and have it for dessert after dinner elsewhere!
Since my first visit, I’ve been back multiple times to try to get my hands on their Salted Butterscotch Brownie (RMB 27) but they were always “sold out”. It wasn’t until this past week that we finally got our hands on one and though it was a bit more dense (not as gooey as your typical American brownie), it was still very moist and the salted butterscotch helped to balance out the sweetness. While it was a bit annoying that they were often out of menu items, it meant that I just ended up with the chance to try more of their menu.
Their White Chocolate Crème Brûlée (RMB 37) is a fantastic rendition of your classic Crème Brûlée and both their Dark Chocolate Soufflé (RMB 75) and Vanilla Custard Profiteroles (RMB 65) are both to die for.

The Floating Alaska (RMB 68) was a bit of a miss, but their White Chocolate Butterscotch Block (RMB 35) is surprisingly awesome.
Here’s another beauty shot of that slice of that gorgeous Chocolate Mille Crepe Cake (RMB 37) lined with a mind-blowing number of layers of thin chocolate crepe evenly spaced between light chocolate cream.

And although waffles seem a stretch from their core menu, they are some of the best we’ve had. I recommend going for the Buttermilk Waffles (they also have Dark Chocolate Waffles) which have the perfect level of airy-ness and crispiness. The Red Velvet Berries Waffles (RMB 68) tastes as good as it looks and it’s drop-dead gorgeous!
