CrossFit Slash Opens Reebok’s 1st Affiliated Box in Sanlitun!
From the ashes of Middle Kingdom Fitness (MKF) rises the first officially affiliated Reebok CrossFit box in Beijing – CrossFit Slash!
Just 2 years since MKF first brought Crossfit Fitness to Beijing in what was known as “the dungeon of Guanghua Lu SOHO”, owner Tim Hill has officially moved out of his small yet functional space into a glorious new gym-come-true. Though the last gym was the size of a shoebox compared to this new monstrosity, it was home to many active Beijingers who were looking for an outlet that wasn’t conventional.
More than twice the size!
What CrossFit offers is nothing new under the sun, but what attracted me most to MKF was their balanced approach to fitness, emphasizing safety and technique (perfect form is key to repetition, efficiency and improvement) and they understand the importance of intimate sessions.
Though their new venue can accommodate a lot more participants, their long-term fitness philosophy and intimate approach to classes has remained unchanged:
“CrossFit Slash is a school, not just another gym to go to squeeze in a workout. It is a place to learn and grow – to improve your body, your mind, AND your life. It’s is a place to become knowledgeable in the mechanics, strengths, limitations, and untapped possibilities of your body. At CrossFit Slash, we want you to use your brain as well as your muscles to learn, to challenge yourself, to try new things you never thought possible, to practice new skills that require you to be focused and present. We will teach you how to move your body with proper mechanics, to get strong and fast, to increase your power output, to increase your endurance and stamina, to get flexible, stable, and balanced, and to move with grace and agility. For us, the bottom line is this: Fitness allows you to live the best life you can.”
New Gym, but the Same Rules + Approach to Fitness Coaching Applies
Ok, enough with the introductions and explanations, I’ll let the photos of the new space speak for themselves!

After exploring and discovering this new gym space, I sat down with Crossfit Slash’s co-founder and Head Coach Tim Hill to learn more about his new dream gym and what CrossFit Slash can do for you.
Crossfit Slash’s Co-Founders: Tim Hill (L) + Jason Wang (R)
LDS: Can you please tell my LDS readers about yourself, your background and qualifications?
TH: When young I played field hockey to a high level in the UK and did rock climbing, skiing, surfing and more. I started Middle Kingdom Fitness in 2013 because I couldn’t find a gym that I would consider even half decent in Beijing.
Qualifications: CrossFit Level 1, 2, Endurance, Olympic Weightlifting, Powerlifting, IKFF Level 1, FRCms, American Heart Association First Aid, and a couple more.
LDS: After 2 years as MKF (the end of an era!), why the change in name to Crossfit Slash?
TH: Name change happened because of the mess that is trademark law in China. Lesson learned from this: find yourself a damn smart lawyer because it’s a complete clusterF***. MKF is now closed and has moved onto bigger and better things in this iteration.

LDS: Other than the change in name, what is different about Crossfit Slash? What was your goal/vision for this new gym?
TH: The goal was to put down a marker and create the best gym in China. Period. I think that if you come, you’ll agree that we have come pretty close.
For us to offer the best training and training environment possible, we have a 25m long artificial turf running track, climbing ropes, pole dancing, aerial silks, yoga, weightlifting, and more. The gym is around 900sqm and underground so stays relatively cool in summer and relatively warm in winter.
LDS: What new equipment are you most excited to put to use and why?
TH: Well the Assault Airbikes are hard to beat. Come and see why they’re nick named “Satan’s bike”. Really, we wanted to create something that is a playground for adults.
While many dread these Assault Airbikes, here are a few other toys I’m excited to try:
LDS: What sets Crossfit Slash apart from other Crossfit boxes around the world?
TH: The scope of what we can do for one. We offer powerlifting, olympic lifting, endurance training, gymnastics, you name it, we can do it.
LDS: Can you introduce Crossfit Slash’s team, coaches, trainers?
TH: We have Jari Kemi from Finland, our Olympic Weightlifting Coach. Kalvin Wright, a handbalancing coach. Holly Priestland and Chris McMillan, who are CrossFit coaches. Cherry Li, who is our pole dance, aerial silks and all things dance-related coach. And Jason and Leo who are our resident bodybuilding experts! There are others incoming, but this is the core team.
LDS: Other than Crossfit classes, what other classes will you offer?
TH: Handbalancing, yoga, silk yoga, aerial silks, olympic weightlifting, bootcamp, personal training, pole dance, stretching and more.
Handbalancing Coach Kalvin!
LDS: Currently in soft period, when will the gym open officially and what will be ready then that is still a work in progress now? Can new people sign up in soft opening and how does that work?
TH: Soft opening: We aren’t open to new people during soft opening due to coaching constraints. When we open officially we will let people know about our intro courses that will run regularly and all the other options
Official opening: From June 1st we will be going at 95%. I would guess middle/end of June to be 100%. We are still finishing showers and many other misc tasks.
LDS: What diet do you recommend?
TH: Paleo, Zone, IIFYM(If it fits your macros), High carb body building, intermittent fasting. Any diet that is nutrient dense and made up of real food and that fits your lifestyle.
LDS: Top fitness/nutrition gurus you follow and get inspiration from?
TH: For Exercise:
Kelly Starrett: This is the man who “made stretching cool”.
Ido Portal: Ido’s system is unlike almost any other. He does not tolerate whining, but his results speak for themselves.
LDS: Where do you see Slash in 2 years time?
TH: Leading the fitness industry in China.
LDS: Top 3 dining/drinking destinations in Beijing:
TH: Drink: Mao Mao Chong
Affordable dining: It used to be any night shop with Chuanr. Now most of them are gone, probably In & Out Yunnan restaurant.
Expensive dining: Sureno. Not too pretentious and great food.
