Last year I had the pleasure of meeting the bright and inspirational kids who play for an inner city foundation in Los Angeles, California called ICEF Rugby as part of a Hutong education program. We spent a few days showing them Beijing highlights as part of a two-week China trip (Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong) for their rugby program in March 2013.
I was so impressed and moved by this group of students that we rallied all our friends in the rugby community and beyond to support China’s very first screening of their award-winning documentary, “Red White Black & Blue” which was filmed on the group’s previous international trip to New Zealand for a U16 tournament. A beautifully shot film, it showed the story of the team’s leaders and a few of the players who rise above their circumstances of growing up in the inner city, and travel abroad together to play rugby in a land where rugby is its national sport.
But now that the second film of the award winning Red, White, Black & Blue series is out (check out vimeo film trailer HERE), ICEF Founder and Rugby Coach Stuart Krohn is heading back to Beijing to support my two back-to-back fundraising events with proceeds being donated to ICEF Rugby.
BJ FOoDiEs Charity Dinner at Karaiya:
SURPRISE! A SECOND FOoDiEs Dinner for the month of May!
After the last FOoDiEs dinner at Migas got booked out within ONE HOUR of announcing the event (and it ended up with a 60+ person wait list), the FOoDiEs team is surprising their gaggle of foodies with a second FOoDiEs dinner for the month of May at the beautifully renovated Karaiya Spice House this Sunday, May 25!
Part of the Hatsune Restaurant Group, Karaiya specializes in authentic Hunan fare and tailored to those who love spice. Located on the third floor of Sanlitun Taikoo Li Village, Karaiya is not far from its original location. If you’re at the escalator close to MODO and Wagas, just go opposite MODO and you’ll see Karaiya at the end of the platform (next to Invincible Ramen).

The Hutong’s Film Screening Fundraiser:
“The students have big dreams, and some hope to be in the first US Olympic Rugby Sevens men’s and women’s teams when it is introduced in 2016. Others hope for college success, to better their community, and to beat the expectations that surround where they come from.”
After a successful film fundraiser for ICEF’s first film “Red White Black & Blue”, The Hutong is gearing up to host a second film screening for ICEF’s next documentary “Lost and Found in China”.
A film series that’s close to their hearts, this film is all about their trip to China with stops in Beijing (YES! The Hutong made the final cut!), Shanghai and Hong Kong to watch the Hong Kong Sevens tournament.
“This year’s big project has been the sequel (the second of a proposed Trilogy) to last year’s “Red White Black & Blue” which was produced by Cloud South Films. With “Lost & Found in China”, Branch Out Media teamed up with Stuart Krohn (the ICEF rugby program founder and Producer of both films) following the student rugby players to China and finishing their tour at the Hong Kong Sevens.”
ICEF Rugby Embark on Scavenger Hunt in Beijing’s Hutongs
“Proud to show them our home turf, The Hutong was able to give these bright ICEF students a taste of the real Beijing – taking them on scavenger hunts through hidden hutongs, teaching them the power of Qi Gong (a traditional Chinese breathing meditation), showing them how to make Chinese dumplings, treating them to a proper Peking Duck banquet dinner, leading them on a hike up to the Great Wall and one of our favorite moments, taking them to get schooled by local elders in pull-up competitions in the park perimeter of Temple of Heaven and dancing with old Chinese ladies in the park. Though they were only in Beijing for two and a half days days, the impressions they left on all of us was deep and lasting.” – Excerpt from The Hutong’s Recap of their Beijing Trip with ICEF

The film screening will be followed by a Q&A with ICEF rugby program founder and team coach, Stuart Krohn. All proceeds (from both ticket sales and raffle tickets) will be donated to the ICEF Rugby program directly.
