CYJO | Mixed Blood

“Mixed Blood investigates the shaping of identity and culture through tradition, modernization, citizenship, and ethnicity.”

Sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and organized in conjunction with Today Art Museum, Timothy Archambault and Nik Apostolides, Mixed Blood is a photo exhibition of work by CYJO featuring 19 families with children of mixed ethnicity.

CYJO herself grew up in a multicultural community having been raised with an American upbringing in Washington, DC metropolitan area and spending much time in New York City and Beijing. Surrounded and inspired by diversity, her photo exhibition “Mixed Blood” gives viewers a snapshot into the living quarters of select families, giving insight into their personal narratives.

“CYJO’s exploration of identity and its relationship to migration and culture, beginning as early as 2004, continues with these compelling photographic portraits.”

“The families in Mixed Blood present the unprecedented diversity of human relationship, and the increased blending of races and cultures in the 21st century. At the same time, the series suggests the evolving role of individuals and families in defining their own unique identities and shaping their own values in ways that use race and ethnicity as a partial frame, but that also begin…to blur traditional lines and create new categories and connections.” – Nik Apostolides, Curator

The photo exhibition will be showcased from Friday, May 30 – Wednesday, June 18th at the Today Art Museum (part of the Pingod Complex just southwest of Dawanglu subway station).

I highly recommend to check out the Artist & Curator Talk and Opening Reception celebration on Saturday, May 31st!  This will also be a continuing series that will be traveling throughout China.

CYJO | Mixed Blood

“I feel a strong connection to the portraits and narratives in CYJO’s Mixed Blood. They are at once familiar and provocative. They highlight the borrowing, plucking, reshaping, and discarding that we do in fixing our identities at any given time, in a particular space, and for a particular purpose.” – Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, Internationally known educator, President Obama’s sister
