SURGE Art Fair Beijing 2013

SURGE Art Fair 2013

Last night, SURGE Beijing hosted an invite-only preview launch party for VIP guests, serious art buyers and media to have the privileged opportunity to get first bids in before the masses swarm in and rip through all the art works on display at the SURGE Art Fair 2013 running this May holiday, Tuesday, April 30- Thursday, May 2nd in Sanlitun Village’s Orange Space (blow the big screen by the fountains).

Though it was a private event, it was a huge turn-out with many familiar faces mingling and slowly making their way through the maze of artworks, but I was more interested by those art fanatics who were anxiously maneuvering themselves through the crowds to hone in on their desired purchase(s).  Maybe I’m just being nosy, but I love seeing which artworks are selected by their purchasers.  Sometimes it makes perfect sense, but I like it most when it takes me by surprise.  It adds another dimension to the person that you thought you knew. I make a point to play a game with my friends each year where we go around (either together or in secret) and we each pick out a couple of our favorite pieces (taking the price into consideration).  Once we’ve all made mental note of our picks, we try to guess which pieces of art each person selected.  If guessed correctly by someone else, then you must go and purchase that artwork.

This year, it was difficult to narrow down just one favorite so I picked two (though I really wish I could afford a couple of others as well!). No one has guessed correctly thus far, so if you would like to play along with me, feel free to email me (kristen@lumdimsum.com) which art piece you think I picked for myself, then I will purchase that piece of work.  To keep it fair, you can only guess one artwork (don’t go and take a picture of the 800 pieces of art on display and send them all to my inbox please).  But to increase your chances of winning, I will count both pieces I have in my mind (not just one).

With 800 works of art on display (hand-selected by an expert panel out of the 15,000 works submitted to be featured), the quality is high and almost all the pieces are are by new up-and-coming artists who have never been featured before.  Prices range from RMB 200 to a maximum cap price of RMB 30,000, making pieces accessible to the public, many who have never before purchased a piece of art. Last year, I purchased a photo of a bike resting on a hutong wall that was only RMB 200.  This year, I want to up the ante so I hope that someone picks out at least one of the pieces I liked!

About SURGE & AAC

SURGE Art is the leading platform for discovering contemporary art, selected by curators and sold at accessible prices.

SURGE Art, produced by Affordable Art China (AAC) since 2006, showcases China’s most promising, emerging artists in its popular art fairs, selecting talents from renown artist communities to prestigious art schools,  and making their works accessible to the public.

Affordable Art China (AAC) holds annual art fairs in Beijing and Shanghai to give people of all ages an opportunity to learn about Chinese contemporary art and to enter into the Chinese art market. All our events are open to the public so that it is easy for everyone to enjoy art. Outside of our events, we also showcase artwork online to continually make art accessible regardless of location. Not only does AAC attract thousands of art lovers to our annual fairs but it also provides a platform for emerging artists to show their work to a wide audience – including many professionals – and help their career as an artist grow. As our expert team of curators comb through the art villages and schools to find the future stars of the art world, we also work with a number of established artists who year on year continue to support the fair. AAC receives thousands of applications every year but only the highest quality of artwork are accepted.
