“C!Talk is an intiative of a global organization called World Culture Open and is a series of culture-related performances held in the Beijing MOMA Cinematheque every two months.”
Taking place in the smack, dab middle of the sweltering summer heat, here’s an event to help you “chill out” and enjoy performances by international artists showing their talents around the theme : Chill Out.
The last session featured Beijing’s beloved and very hilarious Beijing Improv Group along with a Argentinian Tango and talented multicultural musician Rani Geroult.
This time around, short performances include multiple flutist Bruce Gremo, Brazilian Martial Artists from Mandinga Capoeira, yoga guru Sherri Rao and a cultural tea jam by The Hutong.
C!Talk’s Performing Artists:
Bruce Gremo, Multiple Flutist
Beijing based multiple flutist Bruce Gremo plays an amazing range of flutes including bass flute, alto shakulute, Japanese shakuhachi, glissando head joint flute, Indian bansuri, and Chinese xun. Gremo is the principle flutist in the Peking Sinfonietta and a classical recitalist but when he performs solo he uses his own interactive computer applications that he has been developing since the late 1990s.
Gremo is interested in developing concert formats in which different performance practices meet; classical repertoire and improvisation, hi-tech electronic and acoustic, western and eastern, old and new, functional and ecstatic.
At the 7/21 C!TALK, Gremo will be performing refreshing styles that range from cool beatboxing on a bass flute and Johann Sebastian Bach on an alto shakulute to ambient electronic shimmer with his flutes. In between, he will share valuable knowledge with the audience about the different styles he demonstrates.
Mandinga Capoeira, Brazilian Martial Arts
The Mandinga Capoeira group is a Brazilian Martial arts school affiliated to the international school Capoeira Mandinga and the world-renowned Master Marcelo Caveirinha. In addition to training several different styles of capoeira, such as Angola, Regional, Miudinho, and Maneira, they study the history and development of this very specific art form which grew as a combination of martial arts and dance amongst slaves in Brazil.
The Mandinga Capoeira group actively promotes Brazilian culture by engaging local and foreign communities in Beijing through workshops and performances. Every Saturday volunteers from Capoeira Mandinga Beijing teach boys and girls of age 8 to 12. Through capoeira, they also provide migrant children with much needed physical exercise, promoting self-confidence and social cohesion.
The performance of the Mandinga Capoeira Group will combine elements of rhythmic singing, captivating martial arts movements and enchanting beats with demonstrations of both group and solo performances. Willing to try out some Capoeira moves yourself? The Mandinga group will be engaging with the audience to introduce some air-cutting moves, be sure to be the first to volunteer for this unique act!
Sherri Rao, Yoga Master
After 6 years of study after the famous Pattabhi Jois (the Aspen Tonga originator), Sherri Rao was the first Chinese in his classroom, who had reached the second level practice. From her wide range of interests, hard practice and rich experience in Yoga instructing, Sherri has a very deep understanding in Yoga. Now, she is running two Yoga studios and a Yoga instructor institute and leading her whole team into a constant progress. She is a motivator, inspired to enjoy the progress, promote sharing and express gratitude for life.
Sherri will grace the stage with a captivating yoga performance.
