If you love food made from scratch, sangria and bright, airy spaces, check out the new POP-UP BRUNCH concept every Sunday at Amilana/ALUSS Art Photography Space.

I brunched with the usual suspects this past Sunday and we were crazy for their homemade baked goods (muffins, bagels and waffles!).

For only RMB 50, you can have your choice of 2 courses from the following:

1st Course:

  • Cold, savory gazpacho with almond base
  • Homemade blackberry muffin with seasonal garniture
  • Seasonal fruit salad with homemade creme fraiche

2nd Course:

  • Bacon & leek quiche with fresh salad (vegetarian option available)
  • Homemade BAGELS from Hegel’s Bagels with salmon, creme cheese, red onions and capers
  • Homemade lemon and cucumber ice cream with fresh waffles

To make the deal even better, just add another RMB 25 for a cup of coffee, tea or glass of sangria!

With each option sounding so delicious, we couldn’t help but try it all!

On a related note, from now until July 9th, friend and very talented photographer Helen Couchman will be holding a photo exhibition in the same space (a big added bonus to your next pop-up brunch experience!).

“Couchman has headed out into the streets armed with a camera and three mirrors. The mirrors are used to fuse the different elements of the photographed scenes, both material and immaterial.  The result is not the illusion of a cityscape but rather an intimate yet distant exploration of the fabric, and texture of a city whose detail as well as vistas are in flux.”

Couchman has headed out into the streets armed with a camera and three mirrors. The
mirrors are used to fuse the different elements of the photographed scenes, both

This new photographic series seeks the texture and the vistas of the hutongs that have undergone this process of destruction. As Couchman says, the project aims, “to explore what I can see of the land – literally the earth and fabric of the city. It has a performative angle: process, construction, dirt, proximity and distance are all evident in these images. This is what I am working with.”

Helen Couchman Exhibition Details:

The Joey Chestnut Entourage Conquers Beijing

Posted: June 24th, 2011 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: A Day In My Life, Special Events | Tags: Hot Dog Eating Competition, Joey Chestnut, Nathan's Famous | 2 Comments »

Proudly sporting a “I Heart 北京“ t-shirt all over Beijing, Joey Chestnut is hands-down one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

The man is a hero to many and there’s no wonder why.  He’s incredibly kind, gentle, warm, friendly, open-minded and the man can eat like you wouldn’t believe.  A master of his own body, Joey has skillfully trained himself to improve year after year and with the world record for hot dog eating under his belt, the man’s widely recognized as the best competitive eater in the world.

From his pick-up at the airport and getting up at sunrise to beat the crowds to the Great Wall at 6AM, meeting the kids at the Pingxifu center of Compassion for Migrant Children (CMC) and touring Hou Hai Lake, he was nothing but smiles and good vibes.  Not once did he complain about jet-lag or being tired or uncomfortably hot, which is beyond crazy considering we were running all over the city in 30+ degree weather!

Here are some LumDimSum Snapshots of Joey Chestnut in Beijing:

On Saturday, June 18th, China saw it’s very first national eating competition take place at the Nathan’s Famous 3rd store opening at Wanliu BHG Mall in Haidian District, Beijing.

12 contestants from all different backgrounds and walks of life around China all tried for their chance to win an all-expense paid trip to New York City to compete in the king of all competitive eating contests, the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition in Coney Island, New York on July 4th.

_DFE3920_DFE3911_DFE3982_DFE3991_DFE3954_DFE3965_DFE4013_DFE3962

After 10 grueling minutes of non-stop face stuffing, three clear winners rose above the rest as China’s top dogs.

The winner of the contest, Chris Lam (from HK), took first place prize with a total consumption of 16 dogs followed by “Big Bear” Lv Ming Kui 吕明奎 at 13 dogs and Hebei-native Wang Ran Long 王冉龙 taking third place with 12.

_DFE4030

Third Place: Wang Ranlong 王冉龙, 20 years old from Hebei Province

_DFE4041

Runner Up (2nd Place Winner): Lv Ming Kui 吕明奎, 31 years old from Qingdao

_DFE4053

China National Hot Dog Eating Champion:  Chris Lam, 32 years old from Hong Kong

While this is a good start for China, they are still a long ways to go until they can compete in the same league as 4-time world champ Joey Chestnut who holds the record for 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Both the President of Major League Eating, Mike Antolini and the world’s #1 hot dog eater Joey Chestnut both flew out to Beijing for this contest and stole the show.

With Mike’s hilarious and unforgettable commentary together with Joey’s jaw-dropping performance of 39 hot dogs in only FIVE minutes, he puts the Cookie Monster to shame ie, my ex-favorite eating champ.

Color Me Dumplings: Bao Yuan Dumpling House 宝源饺子屋

Posted: June 21st, 2011 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Foodies & Dining Scene | Tags: Bao Yuan Dumpling House 宝源饺子屋, Chinese food, Xian Lao Man 馅老满 | 1 Comment »

IMG_1561

Dumplings should look as delicious as their insides taste. I’m not sure if dumplings died purple, green, and orange will actually appeal more to your taste buds and although the colors do not affect the taste of the dumplings, they certainly make the whole “jiaozi 饺子 experience” a whole lot more colorful.

Bao Yuan Dumpling House 宝源饺子屋 (click link for Time Out Review) is known for their brightly colored dumplings and extensive range of fillings.  With options for both meat-lovers and vegetarians, there is something for everyone.  I particularly enjoyed with vegetarian dumplings with everything from smoked beancurd, celery, mushrooms, eggs, chives, cabbage, carrots and cellophane noodles.  With unique ingredients like lotus root, eggplant, mushroom and carrot, you should try at least several different combinations and with an order of 6 priced between RMB 6-12, you can afford to try as many different combinations as you like!

Don’t forget to also order a few cold dishes and standard Beijing hot dishes are also available (but I recommend sticking to just different varieties of dumplings supplemented by some cold dishes and cold beer).

IMG_1560

IMG_1558IMG_1563

Review of Bao Yuan Dumpling House 宝源饺子屋: North of 6 Maizidian Jie, Chaoyang District 朝阳区麦子店街6号楼北侧, Tel: 6586 4967

Best Part:

  • Quite possibly the best dumpling house in Beijing (I also really like Xian Lao Man 馅老满 on Andingmennei dajie)
  • An extensive menu of different dumpling fillings with option to color-dye your jiaozi fun colors like green, orange and purple with vegetable juice (carrots, tomatoes, purple cabbage and spinach)
  • Very reasonable prices with orders of 6 dumplings starting at RMB 6
  • Nice, simple decor with different rooms inside
  • Non-smoking section-hooray!
  • Staff was friendly and very capable of making order recommendations according to your taste preferences

Comments:

  • As with most local Chinese restaurants, the turn-over is quick so if the restaurant is full, it won’t be too long of a wait before you’re seated
  • They start by giving you two menus – stick with the one featuring dumplings and cold dishes
  • Drink menu is limited, I recommend cold beer with dumpling dinner
  • This is a great option to bring out of town guests who want a new dumpling experience!

Rating: (on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being best)

  • Food: 8
  • Atmosphere: 6
  • Service: 6
  • Overall Experience: 7

AFF 2011: Erdem’s Psychedelic A/W 2011 Collection

“Inspired by the likes of Jackson Pollack and Cy Twombley, artists whose wives were strongly influential in their work and lives, Erdem takes his collection to a level of sophistication and dark maturity.”

With several accolades under his belt including the prestigious British Fashion Council Fashion Fund award, Royal College of Art graduate Erdem Moralioglu‘s unique use of print has been widely celebrated by fashion insiders.  His ability to incorporate graphics effortlessly into each collection makes each piece both whimsical and unique.

Based in London, this Canadian designer is known for his signature graphics and this collection features intricate lace work and “psychedelic prints”.  Part of the impressive line-up of international designers featured at this year’s Singapore Asia Fashion Exchange (AFX)’s Audi Fashion Festival, Erdem showcased his newest A/W 2011 collection.

Described as “fragile with dishevelled sex appeal”, Erdem’s newest Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection sees a vibrant palette of greens and blues dripping with fuchsias and reds.  Known for his graphic prints, Erdem’s signature flair for merging prints, fabrics and textures is prominent in this new collection.

“Elegantly slim and cut close to the body, Autumn Winter 2011 is modestly provocative.  Dress hemlines drop to fall mid-calf, plunging necklines and deep open backs replace the crew-neck looks of spring. Spaghetti straps and dresses split to the thigh are suggestive of a sense of undress. Mixing evening-wear and day-wear in random contrast, printed stretch cotton skirts are paired with button-down shirts and chunky cable knit sweaters while a floor length silk column skirt is combined with a chiffon blouse with printed sequins. Meanwhile velvet and silk chiffon evening dresses, bound at the waist, flow effortlessly.”

Great Wall Granola: My Answer to Cereal in BJ

Screen shot 2011-06-15 at 3.40.54 PM

My morning ritual of a giant bowl Crispix cereal with low-fat milk came to a screeching halt once I moved to Beijing 5 years ago.  When I was back in California for Christmas a few years ago, I even contemplated packing a box or two of Crispix cereal into my suitcase to bring back to Beijing.  You might call me clinically insane for seriously considering that, but that’s honestly how much I miss my morning cereal ritual!  Not only is Crispix totally non-existent in China, so are many other of my favorite brands and to be honest, the ones that are available here are just crazy expensive.

So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about Great Wall Granola (thanks to theBeijinger.com).  This granola is totally homemade by Nola restaurant’s former head chef Brandon Trowbridge who makes the granola fresh with maple syrup and pecans!

One order (RMB 98) gets you 1 kilo of granola, which is equivalent to about a two-week supply.  If you pay RMB 100, then the extra 2RMB will donated to Compassion for Migrant Children (CMC), a non-profit organization founded to help China’s urban migrant children through social and educational programs.

To place your order, just email: order@greatwallgranola.com with your delivery address and phone number (free delivery within 4th Ring Road and Wudaokou).

Screen shot 2011-06-14 at 9.34.02 AMThe KING of hot dog eating, Joey Chestnut arrives to Beijing, China this afternoon and has announced that he is stoked to be coming out to China for the very first time as a celebrity Guest Judge for China’s very first Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition in search of a China champion to fly to New York for the annual Nathan’s Famous hot dog competition on July 4th in Coney Island.  (Other local judges include Hatsune King Alan Wong, SALT & TERRA Queen Gaby Alves, Gungho Pizza King John O’Loghlen and Fitness Hero Jim Dawson representing the World Health Store.)

With trips planned for him to hike the Great Wall, hop on a rickshaw and ride along houhai to explore Beijing’s hidden hutongs, taste some local specialties including Beijing duck, visit the Olympic green and present a check for 1,000 hot dogs to Compassion for Migrant Children (CMC). Joey should be a local Beijinger by the time we’re done with them.

And the most exciting bit?  With the world-record set by him in 2009 at 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes, Joey has announced that in the 5 minute eating exhibition after the main contest at Wanliu, his goal is to devour 50 hot dogs in 5 minutes!!  Siiiicknesssss!!

Will be epic to watch the champ himself in action!

Heyrobics has already taking Sweden by storm with over 5% of the population participating in Heyrobics on a weekly basis and it’s very quickly becoming one of the most popular aerobics/fitness groups in Beijing!

This Sunday, join Heyrobics in Chaoyang Park for a secret course with a short run and Heyrobics sessions in between!  Led by the one and only blonde Swedish man in bright pink shorts, Linus Holmsater is a great motivator and a hilarious fitness instructor.  He’ll have you dancing and groovin’ like you’d never expect!

Upon completion, they are treating all participants with a picnic in the park with music by DJ Sleeping Bootie and DJ Charlie G.  If that’s not enough reason to get you in Chaoyang park, there’s all kinds free gifts and picnic goodies to treat everyone.

A great reason to spend a lovely afternoon in the park with amazing food, drinks, music and people, the picnic is open to anyone and everyone so feel free to invite friends!

This Friday, 17 June 2011, Maison Camus is about to have an exclusive launch party for their private VIP lounge and outdoor terrace, and LumDimSum has got the hook-up for you.

The event will be featuring free flow drinks from 9-10PM with entertainment provided by DJ Chozie & Friends.

“Maison Camus Lounge is a private space in the heart of Beijing, where like-minded people can meet in a refined environment to enjoy great conversation around a glass of exceptional cognac, champagne or wine. Maison Camus looks forward to sharing with you their passion for fine wines and spirits at this chic event.”

I have yet to visit the space myself, but Maison Camus looks to be a stunning space with a 500 sqm terrace with panoramic views of the city and four individually designed private areas that have been named after famous Camus cognacs: Rarrisime, Borderies, Elegance and Masterpiece.

    Maison Camus Terrace

An event that is sure to be both luxurious and elegant, this membership lounge is launching their open terrace and you won’t want to miss this.

The CAMUS family is recognized around the world for the quality of its Cognacs. We offer of course the full range of our finest cognacs: – The Elegance range of classic blended cognacs – Borderies XO, a cognac made entirely from grapes grown on our own vineyards in the Borderies region: the smallest growth region producing the rarest of all cognacs – Vintage Cognacs: from individual vineyards, a selection of single lot cognacs with unique characters, in very limited quantities. – And cognacs that are normally found only in our Chateau in France.

Get the LDS Hook-Up by being the first of 4 to email me directly (kristen@lumdimsum.com).
