LumDimSaying: Father’s Day

Screen shot 2010-06-20 at 10.55.23 AMfather's day1Fathers are wonderful people
Too little understood,
And we do not sing their praises
As often as we should…

For, somehow, Father seems to be
The man who pays the bills,
While Mother binds up little hurts
And nurses all our ills…

And Father struggles daily
To live up to “HIS IMAGE”
As protector and provider
And “hero or the scrimmage”…

And perhaps that is the reason
We sometimes get the notion,
That Fathers are not subject
To the thing we call emotion,

IMG_0049

Happy Father's Day, Dad!

But he’s so busy every day
In the grueling race of life,
He leaves the sentimental stuff
To his partner and his wife…

But Fathers are just WONDERFUL
In a million different ways,
And they merit loving compliments
And accolade of praise,

For the only reason Dad aspires
To fortune and success
Is to make the family proud of him
And to bring them happiness…

A real life hero,
He’s a guardian and a guide,
Someone that we can count on
To be ALWAYS ON OUR SIDE.

Bravo Rigoletto!

Posted: June 18th, 2010 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Theatre | Tags: National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Rigoletto | No Comments »

IMG_0046Seeing the Opera Rigoletto in the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) aka The Egg for the very first time was such a beautiful experience.

From the emotive orchestra, the strong vocals, the tragic story of love and loss, the classic set design and traditional costumes to the experience of watching such a classic opera within such an impressive space, I left Rigoletto in awe.

Synopsis:

Rigoletto is a story about the hunchback jester who mocks the courtiers around the court of the Duke and is cursed by a Count whose daughter is dishonored. Meanwhile, his beloved and beautiful daughter is seduced by the profligate Duke and while Rigoletto hires an assassin to kill the Duke, his daughter chooses to sacrifice her life to save her beloved Duke, despite his fickle heart.

Tragic, moving love story aside, I was blown away by the music and could not stop humming the tunes for the rest of the night.  *I should apologize now to my friends who had to listen to my pathetic attempts to singing opera last night.

With cameras forbidden inside, I only got a quick snapshot with my iPhone, but I think it captures the essence of Rigoletto, where all the action takes place in the third act:

IMG_0029IMG_0026

Now I’ve heard quite a lot of people hating on the Egg because of it’s modern design, it’s location next to Tian An Men, etc. etc., but whoever thinks that the Egg’s interior is nothing less of remarkable needs to get their eyes checked.  I was beyond impressed – its height, lighting and grandeur aura made my first opera in Beijing truly magnificent.

If you haven’t had the privilege of seeing the inside of The Egg yet, here’s a taste of what lies within:

A New Make-Over for Crêpanini

Posted: June 16th, 2010 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Foodies & Dining Scene | Tags: Crepanini, Sanlitun | No Comments »

IMG_2081

The perfect little nook for a quick bite, Crêpanini is one of my all-time favorite spots, especially during the summer months.

When they first opened last year, they operated out of a mini cubicle of a kichen with a giant window serving perfect crepes and only a few stools indoors with mostly outdoor seating.  The menu was limited with a list of savory crepes & panini sandwiches and a dessert menu composed of sweet crepes, waffles & ice cream. And as limited as that was, it was amazing to have such perfect crepes available in Beijing.

This year, Crêpanini has undergone renovation and re-opened with an expanded kitchen, a additional indoor section for sit-down dining (rather than a few stools at a counter) and a brand new menu with much more variety and a few great Breakfast & Lunch Set Menus.

IMG_2082IMG_2083

Lunch Set (RMB 55):

  • Paris Crepe/Panini (Ham, Emmental cheese, egg) or Saint Michael Crepe/Panini (Goat Cheese, tomato & basil)

  • Chocolate or Jam Sweet Crepe

  • Soft Drink or Tsingtao Beer

Gourmet Set (RMB 65):

  • Saint Michael Crepe/Panini or Celtic Crepe/Panini (Smoked Salmon, Cream, Lemon, Dill)

  • Nutella or Banana & Chocolate Sweet Crepe

  • Soft Drink or Beer

A couple of my favorite crepes:

The Bretonne (RMB 35/37 for crepe/panini) – Now made with buckwheat crepes, it is filled with ham, French Emmental cheese, egg, mushroom & tomato.  Another top pick is the Provencale (RMB 37/41 for crepe/panini) – pesto, grilled chicken, French Emmental Cheese & tomato.  All orders of crepes & paninis are accompanied by a small vegetable salad.

  • Both their Sweet & Savory Crepes are my favorite items on the menu. Their Nutella & Banana Sweet Crepe is Heaven on Earth.
  • Available all-day, it’s a perfect spot for a snack, breakfast or lunch, or even after-dinner dessert
  • They’ve switched their savory crepes to now be made of buckwheat, a more filling & much healthier alternative.
  • Service is very friendly and most speak English.

  • They serve fresh fruit smoothies and juice.
  • Atmosphere is casual, comfortable and super chill.
  • Owners JB & Nicolas are both awesome people.

Comments:

  • With the new renovations and new menu, there is a noticeable hike in their prices compared to when they first opened last year.

A Cut Above the Rest: Fairmont’s The CUT Grill

Posted: June 15th, 2010 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Foodies & Dining Scene | Tags: Champagne Bar, Fairmont Hotel, Lunar 8, Maison Boulud, The CUT Grill | 4 Comments »
Fairmont's Chic Champagne Bar

Fairmont's Chic Champagne Bar

Between Jianwai SOHO and the LG Twin Towers lies the extravagantly plush Fairmont Hotel – the prominent rose colored building with natural light-filled interiors.

Currently in a phased opening stage, the hotel has 40% of their rooms available (80 out of 222 hotel rooms) and they have recently opened all of their divine dining concepts – Lunar 8 (an Asian fusion restaurant serving everything from Indian to Thai and Japanese sushi to Beijing duck), their swanky Champagne Bar, and their most recent opening – The CUT Grill, an upscale, glamorous steakhouse specializing in a wide selection of prime quality chilled imported beef and market fresh seafood.

As you can probably guess, the Champagne Bar features an extensive champagne list but I was most impressed by their creative cocktails.  My favorite – The Signature Chinese 5-Spice Fizz (RMB 68) – was a surprisingly refreshing and tangy cocktail combining Ginger-infused Cognac, clove, cinnamon, star anise & Sichuan peppercorn. With the star anise & Sichuan peppercorn, I guess I was expecting my tongue to turn numb rather than refreshed.  It was really delicious. Other noteworthy cocktails were the Pomegranate & Cucumber Mojito (RMB 68) – a fruity, minty Mojito served in an elegant tall glass and the Lemongrass Martini (RMB 68) – Lemongrass infused vodka with housemade lemongrass infused syrup.

IMG_2033IMG_2032IMG_2034

The CUT Grill literally just opened a week ago and I must say, their steak just jumped to the top of my list for Best Steak in Beijing and their level of professional service is going to give Maison Boulud a run for their money.

Where do I begin?

Let’s Talk Food:

The theme of the night was truffles. A key ingredient in everything from the appetizers to the Morel Truffle Steak Jus to the truffle ice cream dessert, I loved every bit of it.  After the warm bread basket, we received a special treat from Chef Graham – shots of Cucumber & Gazpacho with Truffle Foam.

IMG_2043

For appetizers, we started out with the Crab & Coconut Bisque (RMB 80) – a creamy soup with lemongrass, cilantro and red curry, giving it a spicy kick. The Mustard Seed Crusted Beef Carpaccio with potato-celeriac salad, shaved pecorino and Szechuan aïoli (RMB 115) was beautifully presented and the mixture of beef, potatoes and herbs was delectable. The Sweet & Sour Colossal Prawn Salad with Caramelized shallots, market greens, pomegranate seeds, lemon vinaigrette (RMB 135) was my top pick out of the appetizers as the giant prawns were so fresh and juicy and I admit that I particularly like the combination of fresh fruit together with fresh seafood. To top it all off, our appetizers were paired with a glass of Bourgogne Chardonnay from France.

IMG_2045IMG_2047IMG_2044IMG_2048IMG_2049

After the appetizers came the main attraction of the meal – I ordered the Australian Stockyard Grain Fed 200 days 12 oz. Prime Rib Eye (RMB 598) and let me tell you, it was the Best. Steak. Ever. My mouth begins to water just at the thought of it and as incredibly tender and flavorful the steak was, I was like a kid in a candy store when they served me all three sauce selections (Morel Truffled Jus, Green Peppercorn Cafe au lait, Bearnaise) and a selection of imported Dijon mustards from France – Plain Dijon, Green Peppercorn, Mustard Grain Dijon, Targon Dijon (spicy like wasabi) and Honey Balsamic Dijon.

And even though the steak was beyond good on its own, our steak sides also exceeded my expectations, especially with the Celeriac Black Truffle Mash Potatoes & the Sautéed Forest Mushrooms. I must admit that as beautiful as my steak was when it arrived, by the end, each bite of steak was topped with an assortment of sauces, mushrooms & mashed potatoes. The collective flavors together was to die for and I’m not exaggerating when I say that I savored every single piece as if it were my last bite. My only disappointment was the Tsingtao® Battered Golden Fried Onion & Potato Crisps, which were flavored well, but not up to par with the rest of the meal.  A bit too thin and not as crunchy as they should be.

Other mains we ordered were the Tea Smoked Seared Yellow Tail (RMB 275) and Pumpkin & Fine Herb Ravioli (RMB 175) topped with Seasonal farmed vegetables, rocket pesto, and toasted macadamia beurre noisette.  I have a weakness for smoked fish and their yellowtail was smoked to perfection.  While the ravioli was a nice compliment to the fish and steak, the pumpkin ravioli was too sweet for my taste.  I much prefer savory fillings in my pasta dishes.

IMG_2053IMG_2052IMG_2061IMG_2063IMG_2064IMG_2057IMG_2058IMG_2059

Last but not least, their desserts are exceptional. Not at all standard steakhouse desserts, The CUT offers a very unique and original dessert menu.  Top two picks: Iced Green Apple “Pu-Erh” Chinese Tea (RMB 58) – Freshly spun green apple sorbet with famous Chinese Pu-Erh tea anglaise and “The Cut” Apple Tart with Homemade White Truffle Ice Cream (RMB 58).  I’ve never tried any desserts like either of these – the Pu-Erh tea pudding and fresh green apple surrounded by a ring of maple syrup composed of vanilla & cilantro seeds and of course the white truffle ice cream was something I could definitely get used to having on a regular basis. While those desserts were absolutely perfect, I would not recommend ordering the Chocolate Nage, Lychee Granite (RMB 78) – Spiced chocolate soup with lychee ice and candied ginger julienne, serve with truffle almond mignardie.  It was a strange combination to mix Lychee sorbet in liquid chocolate and the chocolate was more of a chocolate foam than a soup.  I guess I was expecting sort sort of thick, rich chocolate soup. However, the minardies that accompanied the dessert (diced fresh fruit & an almond cookie) were adorable.

By the end of my meal, I had completely stuffed myself into a Happy Humpty Dumpty and was most impressed with their standards of service from the moment I walked in to when I left.  The wait staff were all personable and friendly while maintaining a respectful distance and I was dumbfounded by the thoroughness of their responses to any questions I had about a particular dish or ingredient.  Mad respect for the very professional Fairmont team for training THE most exceptional waitstaff I have encountered in China.

IMG_2067IMG_2071IMG_2065

Review of Fairmont’s The CUT Grill: 8 Yong An Dong Li, Jian Guo Men Wai, 朝阳区建国门外大街永安东里 8 号, Tel: +8610 8507 3617; IMG_2041Opening Hours: From Tuesday to Saturday, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m (Dinner ONLY)

Best Part:

  • The service was up to par with Maison Boulud, if not better.  Never have I encountered local waitstaff in Beijing who speak great English and have such a deep understanding of the menu’s items.  When asked to describe the dessert, the staff knew exactly every part of the dish from the raw ingredients to how it was prepared. Extremely impressive.
  • The chef is incredibly talented with a wealth of experience. All the dishes were perfectly prepared with premium ingredients and original recipes. The creative use of Truffle throughout the menu is most notable.
  • Restaurant Manager Faisal Majeeth is an expert sommelier and I would highly recommend asking him to pair wines with your meal.
  • It’s pretty unbelievable that in the restaurant’s first week, they executed with flawless service & dishes.
  • IMG_2042Highlights of the meal: the Sweet & Sour Colossal Prawn Salad, Steaks & “The Cut” Apple Tart with Homemade White Truffle Ice Cream

Comments:

  • Although the decor of the venue is beautiful and lavish, I still felt like I was in a hotel. Hotels are great, but they can also be pretty generic.  I much prefer a steakhouse to have a darker ambiance with a more cozy, relaxed and original design.
  • Prices are definitely in the fine dining category.  Food and service is top-notch, but expect to pay an arm & a leg for it. If you happen to have the extra cash lying around, then you won’t be disappointed.
  • For a better selection of the menu and a great deal, I’d highly recommend the 3-Course Wine & Dinner Menu:

Your Divine Connection: Janet Thompson @ Kocoon

Posted: June 13th, 2010 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: A Day In My Life, Personal | Tags: Kocoon Spa Lounge | No Comments »

Many Lives, Many MastersI recently read the book “Many Lives, Many Masters” by Brian L. Weiss, M.D. -  a “true” story of traditional psychotherapist who used past-life therapy to cure his patient’s anxiety attacks and recurring nightmares. Through the course of many sessions, his patient could recall hundreds of past lives – having lived each life in places all over the world, as a male and female, each time re-experiencing her previous life’s deaths – whether in war or disease or old age, and where her soul would “rest” before entering her next life for her soul’s next lesson.

Before this book, I had never really given the idea of reincarnation much thought. But every time this patient went into her trance and began speaking from a different life, it gave me goosebumps. And one of the most interesting aspects of this reincarnation theory explained in this book is that the most important relationships in your life – whether it’s your best friend, your spouse, or your family have most likely been a part of your previous lives. And each time your soul returns to Earth, there is a purpose, a lesson to be learned through trial and error until your soul can be freed from the endless cycle of life and death.

In most reincarnation theories, a person’s life is made to sound so tedious and monotonous, like an extended version of schooling, which most people also find tiresome and uninteresting, an obligation and a necessity for a better future. But instead of going to school to get a better education and work to not fail and have to repeat the same class, reincarnation threatens that you repeat the experience of life on Earth once again.  To me, that can only be considered a gift rather than a threat. While life will throw hardships, challenges and pain your way, it is also filled with beauty, love, opportunity and incredible joy and happiness. I live my life with every bit of enthusiasm and happiness I can muster because I don’t want it to end. I don’t know what may happen at the end of this life, so I try to soak up as much as of it as I can, while I still can.

The truth is that no one knows what happens when we die – if there is a heaven or hell, if we are reborn based on our previous life’s karma or for another lesson for our soul’s ultimate growth. As I have stated by personal beliefs in my post Soul Purpose, I am an Atheist. I believe in spontaneous combustion and that we have developed from molecules and will continue to evolve and change slowly over time. Rather than the universe having a mind with purposes and a moral law with the rewards and punishments of eternal heaven, hell, reincarnation, etc., I believe in coincidences, I believe in chance. And an after life? I guess when I die, I’ll find out, but I highly doubt either a heaven or hell will await me.  Like everything else in life, you never know what to expect next.  You can wish, you can anticipate and you can guess all you want, but nothing ever turns out the way you want or expect it to.

In any case, the book was a thought-provoking, entertaining read. Rather than believe it, it was just fun to imagine who in my current life may have played roles in previous life-times, where I could have lived in past life-times and if my current life had a lesson to be learned or what purpose I may need to fulfill.

janet thompsonLast week, I was surprised to find that in my regular newsletter from Kocoon Spa Lounge, they were about to host a free introduction and meditation class with Janet Thompson, a guest practitioner from the UK who is a Past Life Regression Therapist & Spiritual Teacher.

Janet began the introduction class saying that it’s been many lifetimes since she was last in Beijing and that the last time she was here, she had bound feet.

In her current lifetime, Janet is a practicing healer, teacher and channel for the Masters of Wisdom. She is a qualified Hypnotherapist and Past Life Regression Therapist as well as an accredited member of the Spiritual Navigator. She has been practicing past life regression therapy to help her patients heal soul wounds, release unwanted soul imprints, open the heart, clear karma and release blocks, rebalancing energy, and access to your soul purpose.

It was very interesting to hear glimpses about her own past lifetimes and how past life regression works.  Using a particular shallow breathing technique, clients are taken back from last week through their current lifetime, back into the womb and then back into a life where they connected with their spirituality to heal wounded lives and grow from a small, single individual life to a greater energy of the soul and how to unlock and develop your soul’s potential purpose.

If you are interested in her work as a regression therapist and how she works with the loving energies of the Chinese Goddess of Compassion and Love, Kwan Yin, Janet will be hosting host a series of workshops, group channeling and meditation sessions along with one-on-one sessions through June 20, 2010.

Janet will host a Group Channeling & Meditation Class this Monday, June 14 from 7-9PM (RMB 150 per person) along with a Past Life Regression Workshop on Saturday June 19 from 10am-5pm (RMB 770 per person).

One-on-one sessions can also be made by appointment – a 2-hour session is RMB 1500.

LumDimSum Discovery: Comptoirs’ Kiwi Energizer

Posted: June 12th, 2010 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Foodies & Dining Scene, Hot Tips | Tags: Comptoirs De France, Lumdimsum Discovery, smoothies | 2 Comments »

My absolute favorite French Bakery, Comptoirs de France specializes in freshly baked bread, pastries, cakes, desserts and a great selection of salads and sandwiches/paninis as well.

What you may not know, is that Comptoirs also offers a selection of fresh fruit summer smoothies, which are not only refreshing and delicious, but also healthy and nutritious. I was surprised to find that these smoothies were not included within their standard menu nor were they listed on their cafe’s menu board.

All of  thirst-quenching smoothies range from RMB 18-32 and on a scale of 1-5, each smoothie is ranked on how energetic, purifying, immunizing, digestive, and dermo-vivifying each is.

IMG_1726I ordered the Kiwi Energizer (RMB 32) – “A refreshing green cocktail that will top your energy battery.”

A thick smoothie with a blend of kiwi and lemon, the combination of flavors is a perfect balance of citrus and tang.

Kiwi Energizer Ranking:

  • Energetics – 5
  • Purifying – 2
  • Immunizing – 4
  • Digestive – 2
  • Dermo-vivifying – 4

Some other recommended top-selling smoothies include the Mango Blush (RMB 28) – a fresh blend of mango, orange and lemon, the Fapai Lover (RMB 28) – a combination of strawberries, lychee and yogurt, and the Islands Passion – apple, pineapple, lime and passionfruit puree.

LumDimSum Hot Tip: After 7:30PM, all freshly baked breads, pastries & desserts are buy-one-get-one-free!  I highly recommend their fresh rye bread, whole meal loaf, and their chocolate eclairs & tartlets.

Ever wanted to know the trade secrets behind Hatsune’s legendary sushi rolls?

Yesterday – Wednesday, June 9th – Alan Wong hosted a second sushi making class where everyone got their very own sushi making kit and learned how to make and then eat their very own creations!

A fun and interactive event, thanks to everyone who came out to begin their path to becoming a Sushi Samurai.
