Life’s Secret Revealed

Posted: March 10th, 2010 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Food For Thought | Tags: Book of the Month, The Secret | 7 Comments »

secret sealI just finished reading The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, a book that teaches us that we create our lives with every thought every minute of the day.

I may not believe in fate or destiny, karma or reincarnation, but I have always believed in the power of positivity, an individual’s power to control and make your own path.

As I have quoted in previous entries, my personal philosophy is that getting the most out of life is all about having the right attitude.

“Believe in the power of positivity: POSITIVE THINKING= POSITIVE ENERGY= POSITIVE EVENTS BECAUSE OF= POSITIVE YOU!”

– My insightful friend Kat, wise beyond her years

It makes logical sense:  The happier you are, the more optimistic your outlook, the more you exude positivity all around you = Higher probable chances for positive outcomes and rewards coming back to you. “What goes around, comes around.” Call it karma, call it logic, call it fate, call it mathematical probability. Same concept, different names.

secret1The Secret takes this basic thought a big step forward.  It encourages positive thinking because positive thinking brings about positive results, but The Secret also states that you alone control your future, your life, your universe. According to the law of attraction, everything good and bad that comes into your life is a result of your thoughts.  So if you want to change your life, if you want wealth, power, love and health, then all you need to do is to change your thoughts and truly believe that these things are yours and the universe will make it happen. Everything is composed of shared energy, we are all connected, and we are the creators of not only our own destiny but also of the Universe.

In more concrete examples:

  • If you want to lose weight, don’t think about “losing weight” but only think about your perfect weight, what you look like when you are that perfect weight and when you eat, focus on the flavors of the food, the pleasurable sensations of chewing and swallowing, and the food will assimilate into your body perfectly.
  • If you want wealth, use your imagination to believe you already have the money you want.  The better you feel about money, the more it will flow into your life.
  • If you want a relationship, your actions must not contradict your thoughts.  Do not sleep in the middle of your bed, do not send signals to the universe that you are content alone.  And the main message: if you treat yourself with love and respect, you will only attract more your way.

Think about all the miracles that happen on a daily basis. People are told “you will never walk again” and what do they do? They defy their doctors, science and the laws of nature and prove them wrong.

The placebo effect is a perfect example of the law of attraction – When a patient truly believes a tablet is a cure, he cures himself.

People underestimate the power of the human mind.  If you truly want something and truly believe you can have it, then I believe that you will.

“Do what you love.  As you commit to your joy, you will attract an avalanche of joyful things because you are radiating joy.”  – The Secret

The Secret has received a lot of criticism from those who claim that the book misleads readers with unrealistic expectations.  That concept that all you have to do is “ask, believe and you will receive” gives false hope to those in need of conventional assistance in their lives.

My thoughts?  Always two extremes.

Take both beliefs with a grain of salt and use your common sense.  If you are deathly ill, The Secret does not tell you to refuse medicine, it tells you to take it and while you take it, to truly believe that you already are healed so that you will be.

Find balance, use The Secret at your own pace.  If you are not ready to believe that the world is at your fingertips, that you can have whatever you want, then the universe will not deliver what you are not ready to handle.

Reading The Secret has been inspirational for me more above all else.  It’s motivated me to sit down and really think about what I want out of life. It taught me to get in the habit of erasing thoughts that limit myself and my abilities, thoughts that hinder my dreams or thoughts that tell me to conform to society’s expectations and expect to age with time, live a “normal” life, and not to get my hopes up.

The Secret encouraged me to think big, create a wish list, and go for my dreams – all of them, and then some.

According to The Secret, there is no reason for competition or jealousy because the world holds limitless love and miracles to go around.

If you could have anything your heart desired, what would you ask for?  What do you really want out of life?  What brings you the most happiness and joy?  The world is full of gifts and pleasures for us to enjoy – it is full of limitless love, The Secret only requires we realize our desires and clearly ask for what we want.  The Secret gives new meaning to the saying “Your wish is my command.”

The Secret may not change your life, and it may not change mine either.  Only time will tell, but in any case, it has reinforced my belief in the power of positive thinking and I hope to share this message with you and make you think twice the next time you’re being a Debbie Downer or Negative Nancy.  I hope you will try to change your attitude, your outlook, and your energy for the better.

Imagine if everyone in the world controlled their mentality to hold only cheerful and positive thoughts. The next time you feel blue or doubtful, just think about all the things you are thankful for and all the things that bring you joy, make you laugh and raise your spirit.

To have more happy, more optimistic people in this world will only make it a better place.
