LUMDIMSUM'S TOP 5 PICKS

Beijing Brunchathon + Second Sip

Posted: December 13th, 2009 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Foodies & Dining Scene | Tags: Cafe Zarah, Champagne, Chef Too, Gustomenta, Jin Ding Xuan, Meili Autumn, The Orchard, Vineyard Cafe, Weekend Brunch, Westin Chaoyang | No Comments »

Beijingers are spoiled with choice when it comes to weekend brunches.

Brunch in Beijing means more than a hangover cure or a weekend gossip fest, it can ultimately be an all day excursion.

With heavenly places like the Orchard and the Vineyard Cafe, you can easily find yourself spending the better half of the day lounging around, enjoying the good food and good company, knowing that today is your day to relax, worry-free before Monday rolls around.

Orchard Oasis

Orchard Oasis

Top 5 picks for a lazy Sunday brunch:

  1. The Orchard – It’s a magical place. The Sunday Brunch Buffet is absolutely worth the RMB 180 considering the quality and wide assortment of delicious “European Comfort Food” dishes to choose from.  There is a delightful selection of fresh, home-baked breads (I’m a sucker for fresh bread), fresh, organic salads, whole salmon, 2 soups, over 10 different entree dishes (meats and veggies), and 5 different dessert baked goods.  Only downfall: it’s a nightmare to find and to leave if you don’t have a car/driver.
  2. Vineyard Café – A hidden gem, down an alley across from Yonghegong (Lama Temple). I say ‘hidden’ in the sense that it’s a bit difficult to find, but it’s incredibly popular. Don’t go without a reservation, especially if you want to sit in their outdoor courtyard seating.
  3. Chef Too - Known for their steaks, but I enjoy their eggs benedict.  See review here
  4. DimSum Brunch @ JinDingXuan (Tuanjiehu branch) – 24-hour joint with buzzing atmosphere, and great, cheap dimsum anytime of day. See review here.
  5. Café Zarah – (located on Gulou): A sweet little Cafe on Gulou with wifi, good people-watching perch, and satisfying breakfast combos and ice cream from Gustomenta

And then there are those dangerously tempting and not to mention gluttonous hotel champagne brunches.

When the Westin Chaoyang first launched their Sunday brunch, Bubblicious, I was there in a heartbeat since my ultimate Beijing champagne brunch is by far the Westin Financial Street brunch, Senses.  This is by far the most elaborate, extensive, high-quality hotel brunch in Beijing. Champagne included is close to RMB 400 including the 15% service charge, it’s about 50 RMB less without the bubbly.  See review here.

My previous experience of Bubblicious was satisfactory, winning bonus points with their fresh squeezed juice and smoothies selection along with a jaw-dropping dessert section.

This past weekend, my good friend and fellow foodie MeiLi Autumn just brunched it up at the Westin Beijing Chaoyang westin chaoyangbrunch, Bubblicious and as a LumDimSum fan, she would like to present to you a ‘second sip’ of this mega-brunch.

Bubblicious Second Sip by Meili Autumn

  • This was my second Bubblicious at the Westin Chaoyang and I have to say it did not disappoint. At such Mega-Brunches, as I like to call them, one must have a clear strategy in order to enjoy all that the venue has to offer. Upon first walk-around I saw an impressive meat station, an extensive raw bar with lobster, oysters, prawn, and assorted sashimi, sushi chefs hand-rolling fresh sushi,  DIY Caesar salad bar, Chinese noodle section, dimsum and dumpling assortments, Italian section with pizza and handmade pastas, an amazing array of Indian curries, roasts meats, and naan, breakfast station with fresh juices, smoothies, eggs to order and all the sweet breakfast carbs (pancakes, French toast, waffles) and of course the breakfast meats (bacon, sausage, ham). I haven’t even gotten to the dessert and alcohol sections!

This was a lot to take in, I admit. But take it in I did, in platefuls and platefuls. It was decadent and over the top and I felt like royalty at a glamorous feast. The waiter never let my champagne glass get dry and they serve Vueve Clicqot too- one of my faves. If taking vodka shots is more your style on a Sunday morning, they also have a shot bar with different chasers and mixers.

My favorite little touch is their DIY Blini station. Blinis are small, yeast-leavened, buckwheat pancakes that bubblicious adoriginally come from Russia. Classically they are served with sour cream and caviar or smoked salmon. They go perfectly with champagne, oysters, and yes, vodka.

I have to say, I’ve been to many Mega-brunches in Beijing. Bubblicious is definitely at the top.

Best Part:

  • LOTS to choose from and EVERYTHING was delicious
  • Great Indian Food- some of the best I’ve had in BEIJING!
  • Delicious smoothies and fresh juices
  • Innovative and Creative
  • Great Service
  • Amazing desserts- try their custard bread pudding
  • Family-friendly

Comments:

  • A little disappointed at the weak looking oysters
  • Didn’t care for the brand of ice cream- stick with Haagendaaz.
  • Bit Pricey – they just raised it from RMB 368 to 398

**For the next two Sundays, the Westin’s Bubblicious brunch will be featuring the acapella group, “Under Broadway” singing Christmas Carols directed by my good friend, Cody Leung.

The Rabbit is Back

Posted: December 12th, 2009 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: A Day In My Life, Bars & Nightlife | No Comments »

white rabbit OpeningBeijing’s favorite After-Hours spot is back at it again.

The new White Rabbit has taken over the old ChinaDoll space in Tongli Studio (Sanlitun back street, just under Kokomo).

I checked out the space at tonight’s opening and was pleased to find that despite the new makeover and location, White Rabbit has retained the same minimalistic white, concrete, techno groove as before, but not as grimy and dark as it once was.  I used to call White Rabbit ‘the big black hole’.

At the door, you are greeted by two massive security guards, and then step in to face an unexpected massive long bar that spreads out to right of the space, where you find a center dance floor with rows of tables on both sides.

Not sure how many people were getting bottle service, but with the new furniture and perfect spot to just chill out and people watch the dance floor, White Rabbit might just be changing their reputation from the official ‘after-hours’ destination and start getting the crowds in before 3am.

I see the high possible chance that White Rabbit will retain its reputation as THE after-hours destination, but with both ChinaDolls gone, I also see the potential for White Rabbit to branch out and possibly fill the void for all those underground techno/drum&bass junkies missing a place to call their second home.

Pussy Pussy

Posted: December 10th, 2009 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Foodies & Dining Scene | Tags: Budapest, Buffet, Danger Doyle's, Hooters, Hungarian food, Morel's, Purple Haze, Set Lunch Meal | No Comments »

budapestFun Fact:  The Hungarian word for ‘kiss‘ is ‘pussy‘.   I will always remember my Hungarian friend who would end phone conversations with her mother saying “pussy pussy“.

Yesterday, I tried the lunch buffet at Budapest, Beijing’s first ‘authentic’ Hungarian restaurant. The interior reminded me of Morel’s with tables covered  with red and white checkered table cloths and that same “old Beijing Western-style restaurant that’s trying too hard to be authentic.”   Even though there were two other tables of people in the restaurant, it was so uncomfortably quiet, I felt like I needed to whisper. And the music?  Instead of playing some good ‘authentic’ Hungarian music, they were playing top 40 hits for background music – some hip-hop, Christina Aguilera, etc. And they were even selling Hungarian CD’s on a shelf by the door.

After looking at the menu and not really knowing what to order, my friend and I decided to just go for the lunch buffet.

budapest restaurant

Budapest Restaurant's interior shot

For RMB 48, the lunch buffet served:

  • Green Salad
  • Corn & mayonnaise – literally corn soaked in mayonnaise
  • Goulash Soup – tasty, but would be better thicker
  • Pork Ragout – diced up pork in red sauce
  • Gnocchi & bread dumplings  – dry and cold
  • Hunter-style beef – dry beef slices sitting in a bright yellow mustard sauce
  • Marinated Chicken Breast and leg
  • Crunch Duck leg
  • Curdy Pasta with bacon – tasty shell pasta with cheese & bacon
  • Sponge cake with chocolate sauce & lemon sponge cake – disappointing
    Budapest1

I wouldn't mind having a hearty, authentic Hungarian meal here

  • Selection of fruit – watermelon, grapes, melon

I only know the name of these dishes because I asked the waitress to go through the menu and point out each dish that was served at the buffet. No name tags were provided for any of the dishes.  Food was just sitting there and up for grabs.

I think restaurant buffets are such a gamble.

From a restaurant’s point of view:  You want to give customers good value (which we got) considering you are providing customers the opportunity to try a variety of the restaurant’s top dishes off their regular menu for dirt cheap hoping that customers will come back for dishes they remember from the buffet.

From a customer’s point of view: You go for the buffet option instead of ordering a la carte off the regular menu b/c you want to try a

...or maybe here in this castle

...or maybe here in this castle

variety of dishes, especially if it is your first time. Once you have tried the selection provided and if you find that the buffet is not up to par, if you don’t find something you love, a reason to come back, you will not return.

That is the case with Budapest. It’s a shame because maybe the food was not good because it had been sitting out?  Or made in bulk?  Maybe ordering a la carte off the menu would have been the better bet?  I liked the idea of trying some truly authentic Hungarian cuisine, but based on this experience, I just don’t think this restaurant reaches that standard.

Budapest’s website welcome message pretty much sums it up:

welcome

Dear customers,

We apologize for any inconvenience you might have at us. Apparently we cannot guarantee quality. We are working on that the restaurant would run under Hungarian management again.

Review of Budapest: 2nd Floor of China View (same complex as Danger Doyle’s, Hooters, 2nd Purple Haze, etc.) 朝阳区中国红街大厦六号楼二层202室 工体东门对面, Tel: 8587-1028/ 8587-1058

Best Part:

This would work too.

This would work too.

  • Lunch buffet was pretty cheap and lots of food if you’re all about quantity
  • Best part of buffet was Goulash Soup & Shell Pasta with Bacon
  • Service was polite and made the effort to be helpful when I asked questions about what the dishes were

Comments:

  • Quantity over Quality, food was very mediocre at the buffet, which they should just discontinue.  Food was not hot, dry, and just not up to par
  • Big Buffet No-No: Not providing name cards for the dishes provided (we had no idea what we were eating)
  • No picture menu, making ordering a la carte difficult if you are not familiar with Hungarian cuisine
  • Dishes were all very hearty – mostly meat and pasta/breaded dishes
  • Food and Service mediocre
  • Design is tacky and reminds me of Morel’s Belgium Restaurant
  • Lacking restaurant “buzz” and vibes – uncomfortably silent, empty feeling, and listening to hip-hop and Christina Aguilera is not how I would imagine an ‘authentic Hungarian’ restaurant to feel

  • Take a Walk on the Wild Side

    Who Will Survive 2012?

Posted: December 9th, 2009 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: A Day In My Life, Food For Thought, Hot Tips | Tags: MegaBox, Movie Review, Sanlitun Village | 2 Comments »

2012Everyone’s talking about 2012 – whether they’re hating or raving, this movie’s got a lot of buzz.

And now that I’ve seen it, I can’t stop thinking about it.

I remember vividly the anticipation of reaching the year 2000 and now the world is believed to end on 2012. Heavy stuff.

Before I dive into this subject, I’ll give you a basic introduction:

    Basic Synopsis:

Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring John Cusack as a published author trying to save his family, Danny Glover as the US President and Woody Harrelson as a crazy radio talk show host, 2012 is the end of the world as we know it, a date marked in history significant across so many cultures, religions, scientists and governments. An epic story of the survivors and their struggle to stay alive and save/say goodbye to loved ones.

    2012 Phenomenon:

2012 mayan“The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs and proposals, which posit that cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on or around December 21 in the year 2012,[1][2] which is said to be the end-date of a 5,125-year-long Mayan Long Count calendar. These beliefs may derive in part from archaeoastronomical speculation,[3] alternative interpretations of mythology,[4] numerological constructions, or alleged prophecies from extraterrestrial beings.” – Wikipedia

Review of 2012: A 2 1/2 hour movie with overly dramatic and sitting-at-the-edge-of-your-seat action scenes where the main characters continue to narrowly escape death countless times. Mediocre acting, but the movie itself is a great concept and overall great special effects and ‘epic storyline.’

    Best Part:

    • Powerful message and epic storyline2012-2
    • Great special effects makes for a trip to the movie theater worth it (MegaBox at Sanlitun is half-price on Tuesdays! Only RMB 40 per ticket)
    • Pretty up-to-date references with fake Arnold as Californian governor, Queen of England, but Danny Glover as Obama?  I don’t know about that.
    • Exaggerated action scenes keep you clenched with anticipation and at the edge of your seat

    Comments:

    • I wish the main character was someone other than John Cusack – not a fan
    • Acting overall was pretty mediocre (the actress who plays the daughter of president is painfully bad)
    • English with Chinese subtitles (which is bad if you can’t read Chinese b/c there are quite a few times when people are speaking in French, Russian or other languages and there are no English subtitles available)

    Food For Thought:

To even begin to consider the possibility of the end of the world seems unfathomable.

The chances of a global cataclysm bringing the end of the world seems much more far-fetched than say, a nuclear war where we self-destruct and destroy ourselves.

But hypothetically speaking, the end of the world is approaching in two years. What do you do? What can you do? How would you prepare yourself? Do you try to buy a billion Euro ticket to be one of the selected elite population rescued from global destruction? Do you even try to survive? Or do you just accept doomsday?

I know I for one would not be a selected survivor out of the entire world population and I am not sure if I would even try to survive.  I think I would find comfort in knowing that I was not alone and I would accept that this was out of my hands. Bad things happen all the time. Freak accidents happen all the time. And when they do, it is unusual, unlucky, unexpected, leaving you in a state of shock, fear and devastation.

But in the unlikely scenario that the world will come to an end, I would at least find comfort in knowing.  I would know it was the end and I would be able to say goodbye. But more than that, I find comfort in knowing I am not alone. I’ve always believed that no matter the situation, people is better than no people. True happiness is greatest when shared, grief is soothed by the comfort of another.  Whether that shared consolation is found in God or in your best friend, it is human nature to find solace and peace in knowing you are not alone.

Quote of the Day: “Life is so much better when you’re not walking it alone”

I think ultimately your answers to the questions I’ve raised will reflect your personal beliefs and your faith.

I am curious to know the correlation and see the consistencies/contrasts between someone’s religion/faith/beliefs and their actions, thoughts, and means of dealing with imminent global obliteration.

If you knew, what would you do?

SALT 2 InvitationTonight, SALT celebrated its Second Year Anniversary with champagne, fresh fruit daiquiris, food so good it was ambushed as soon as it stepped outside the kitchen, and a sophisticated crowd of foodies with an appreciation and loyalty to this contemporary and personable restaurant, a place that continuously receives recognition for its service, food quality, innovative young chef & Fashionista Ana Esteves, and good value.

Highlights of the evening: fresh strawberry daiquiris, tender lamb chops, mini cups of soup, smoked salmon ceviche, skewers of meat…along with pretty much every item that was all on point.

I highly recommend SALT’s winter lunch set menu with 2 courses at RMB 88 and 3 courses at RMB 98.

For the more adventurous foodies, try SALTASTATION, the popular degustation concept from SALT. A pairing menu with five innovative tasting courses paired carefully with personally selected new and old world wines. 488rmb all inclusive, 288rmb food only.

Congratulations to SALT on a very successful celebration and to many more anniversaries to come!

Let’s Seafood may be by the same people behind Let’s Burger, but it is by far the better pick. Located just next door and keeping in the same theme of casual dining with paper menus and boxes to check off, Let’s Seafood blew my expectations for good value.

Pan fried Imported Red Mullet RMB 68

Pan fried Imported Red Mullet RMB 68

Let’s Burger may serve up a good burger with a glorious selection of sauces, but I always resented the fact that every additional topping, side dish, and drink was at an extra cost.  And what kind of place refuses to serve customers water? A burger that may have started out at RMB 65 would make an unexpected turn to total RMB 120.

On the other hand, Let’s Seafood not only offers an extensive selection of seafood salads RMB 68-78(massive portions), top-notch mussels RMB 65, six varieties of whole fish main courses RMB 68-118, fish & chips RMB 68, and great seafood combos RMB 78. Lobster sets are also available for lobster lovers RMB 238  All orders come with freshly baked homemade bread along with a brilliant assortment of sauces and their main courses all come with homemade seafood soup, along with a generous serving of lemon rice and pan-fried potato. AND they serve you water.

See? That’s what I’m talking about.

Review of Let’s Seafood: 1/F, Nali Patio, 81 Sanlitun Beilu, 三里屯北路81号那里花园1层  Tel: 5208-6038

    Best Part:

    Fresh Mussels RMB 65

    Fresh Mussels RMB 65

    • Good Value – order an entire fish (RMB 68-118) and it comes with homemade seafood soup, homemade bread, a glorious selection of sauces, and generous sides of lemon rice and pan-fried potato.
    • Portions are generous, products are imported fresh
    • I’ll definitely be back for the mussels and seafood salads
    • Relatively healthy option for a meal, leaving your stomach satisfied, not heavy
    • Interior design is casual, yet comfortable with good ambiance
    • Wi-fi internet
    • Extensive Wine List

    Comments:

    • The portions are generous, but the massive plates are a little overboard
    • Bathrooms are outside and a trek to find and unlike Let’s Burger, there is not even a sink to wash your hands
    • Service is not perfect, but decent for having just opened.

Rating: (on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being best)

    • Food: 8
    • Atmosphere: 7
    • Service: 6

    Chains with Confusing Consistency

Posted: December 7th, 2009 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Food For Thought, Foodies & Dining Scene | Tags: Alan Wong, Cantonese food, Chao Dian, Chinese food, Dan Goodman, dimsum, Fornet Dry Cleaning, Hatsune, Jin Ding Xuan, Sanlitun, Sichuan food, Tango | 3 Comments »

If you choose to franchise your business, whether you own a grocery chain, laundry chain or a restaurant chain, its safe to say that a certain level of consistency should be expected – consistency in the product sold, service, quality, quantity and selection.

    Example of Consistent Chain:

When the second Hatsune opened in Sanlitun Village in April 2009 as a new location with a new design and makeover with the menu, Alan Wong was meticulous in ensuring that the service and product would equal that of the original Guanghua Lu branch that opened in 2001.  Customers like the option of a second location, but they still want to satisfy their sushi samurai cravings – they still expect the usual Moto-Roll-Ah among other favorite rolls.

    Example of a Confused Chain:

I remember the first time I moved apartments and went to the neighboring Fornet Dry Cleaning Store to find that my Fornet card with pre-paid credit did not apply to this new Fornet or the gazillion other Fornets in Beijing.  What is that about?

    New Example:

After hearing about my terribly disappointing experience at Chao Dian this past week, my good friend Dan Goodman FINALLY took me to the 24-hour dimsum spot near my apartment in the Tuanjiehu hood.  People always tell me about this mysteriously good dimsum spot near me, and I never knew what they were talking about…until today.

Surprise to me, this ‘mysterious dim sum restaurant’ turned out to be none other than the very well-known restaurant chain – Jin Ding Xuan金鼎轩. I have been to the branch next to Tango at least half a dozen times, whether for dinner or late-night grub and always took it as it is – a relatively cheap and massively ginormous Chinese restaurant with quick service, awful entertainment and half-decent food. I never even thought of it necessarily as a dimsum restaurant since their menu also features a lot of Sichuan dishes and standard “Chinese restaurant” dishes.

So naturally, I quite expected my brunch experience today to be similar to my previous experiences and was pleasantly surprised to find a winner!  Again, massive restaurant with 4 levels, it was packed (and luckily no wait upon arrival), quick service, big menu with lots of pictures, and a very satisfying dimsum brunch!

As it was a great experience, I’ll be a returning customer for certain, but knowing the way “chain venues” go in China, I think I’ll still be avoiding the branch by Yonghegong.

Review of Jin Ding Xuan 金鼎轩: 15 Tuanjiehu Nanlu, Chaoyang Park 团结湖南路15号 Tel: 8596-8881

    Best Part:

    • A good selection of dimsum staples – overall good taste and good prices (ordered about 8 dishes and total bill was RMB 86 (bill at Chao Dian for same amount of food was RMB 174)
    • The place was packed, lively atmosphere
    • Open 24 hours
    • It’s in MY hood!

    Comments:

    • Normally in the “Best Part” section, I would highlight the fact that there are 4 branches of Jin Ding Xuan (Yonghegong, Tuanjiehu, Olympic Area, and Fengtai), but I would say my experience eating dimsum today was much better than my previously dimsum meals at the Yonghegong branch (which I thought was not fresh and very mediocre).
  • Highlights were BBQ Pork Buns, Shaomai, and LuoBuoGao, with other dishes being satisfactory.  Everything was good overall but nothing exemplary or mind-blowing in terms of taste and quantity. But for the price, it’s great value.
  • I’m just waiting for the day when someone opens a Hatsune equivalent to DimSum in Beijing (casual, fun vibe, smart design, high quality raw materials, great service, all for a fair price).
